Depends on engine design. BMW used to make their inline sixes (M30, M88/3 and S38 are some examples) with large tolerances. These engines needed high viscosity oil (put some new fancy 0W20 in one and it won't last more than a few tanks of gas) and these engines tended to use oil.

hmmm...the oil consumption issue is concerning...it shouldn't be burning oil (or leaking it either, of course).

1.5 quart in 4 months? how many km run in that time? that seems high. my bimmer burns about 500 cc in 10,000 km.

Yep. My 300ZX engine eats a bit of oil as there are larger tolerances with the forged pistons. Get it good and hot on a track day and no consumption.

The more I dig into the oil consumption issue the more I don't like what I'm finding. Fairly prevalent problem on the 2012 model year, and compounded by the fact that you can apparently lose half the oil volume before the indicator light comes on. Some guys have pulled out dry dipsticks when they heard the engine knocking.

Would there be some way to confirm with certainty that this particular vehicle doesn't suffer that problem?

Overall it has put a wet blanket on the RSpec for me. Unless I find a 2013.

No noticeable oil consumption in mine, don't even need to top up between changes. It's a V6 though.

Check your oil when you top up with gas... like people use to do?

Hard to tell if this one has the issue or not, pull the dipstick and check it? Dealer most likely didn't do an oil change or top up.

It is impossible to tell, unless the dealer will give you an extended (1000km+) test drive.

burning oil would be a deal breaker for me...aside from the potential catastrophic engine failure that could occur, depending on how much oil it burned, could also affect emissions testing.

Jaeger, I did a quick search and found this tidbit:

From what Imhave learned, the oil consumption problem was caused by the use of some German made low friction piston rings that would not properly seat thereby allowing for oil blow by and the resultant consumption. Hyundai was only one of several manufactures that used these defective rings.

It appears that Hyundai figured this out and any vehicles with build dates after Feb. or March of 2012, possibly earlier, have good rings in them with no consumption problems.

So, if you have the VIN you can figure out the build date.

By the way, my uninformed take is that the Lexus is the showcase for a brand whose mission it is to build the highest quality cars possible. As such it is impeccably built and will go the long haul.

The Hyundai is good car that was built to be a cheaper 5 series and just happens to have a strong motor. As such corners were cut to meet a price point and it will nickel and dime you as it ages.

i wouldn't necessarily say that...i think Jaeger's current Sonata, which is 5 years old has been trouble free...our previous ET (2011 model) was owned for 5 years and was pretty good (recently replaced with the Sorento as my wife wanted something bigger with more features)...the only things replaced on the ET were a faulty radio unit shortly after we got it and a steering link a couple of years into ownership, both things covered under warranty with no cost...the rest is just maintenance...i've had my Rio5 for just over 4 years now with no issues either, it even still has the original brakes.

How?

visual signs of "smoke" will likely cause a fail...as well, some of that may cause residue on sensors/CAT (not sure here, just guessing) which could translate into other issues down the road.

sure, but we won't know for another 5 years if this current crop of product will still be decent...however, if the first 5 years is pretty good, it's fair to say the next 5 years should be decent too.
