saw a few people post the link on facebook... coming this summer i guess? definitely something needed to be addressed... a shame we now can't get a beater that is truly a beater anymore... and there will be a very small amount of very inexpensive cars that will get to see the road anymore...

as a salesperson, this will probably actually help us more than hinder as a private sale will become just a bit harder, an as-is deal will be a very tough sell, and knowing a car not in top shape won't be able to be sold, people might ditch their rides sooner.

it will add costs to used cars though, increase turnover times as well as lower trade values since we can't take the chance on a car needing a huge $ safety.

This is for Ontario. Here's a media report with a further link to the actual handbook at the bottom.

I'm guessing there will be a flurry of transactions before the new rules come into effect...

If the requirements between provinces are so different, why wouldn't someone just go to Québec or another province to get a car? Or unless this change refers to the general roadworthiness test that everyone has to go through.....

Because you have to register the vehicle in the province you live in.
Ah, so this is more related to the annual roadworthiness test that everyone has to partake in......

The new safety check is quite complete compared to the old one.    I note that wheel spacers no longer allowed. HID bulbs in reflector housings not permitted

Yup cars just got more expensive in ontario like everything else.

I like the rules that are the cars safer the old rules are so sad.   Pretty much all cars passed.

But now any light on  forget it.

Not really going to be a problem for me but low income people are screwed.

But come one...an oil leak?  Seriously?  That's BS.

“level 3 leak” – means seepage of fluid that forms drops that fall during
inspection

Yeah that might be a little excessive, depends though I guess.  Main seal leaking or oil pan, that sucks yeah it should be fixed.

But leaking from the drain bolt, that would suck.  My Audi actually leaks from the drain bolt right now, but to fix it I have to drain the oil and put a washer on.

But neither of these things make a car unsafe.

You actually have to have a working car now.  Before you could pass without an engine.

It's more like a buyer's safety now.  After you pass this you'll know the car is good.

Previously it didn't really mean much.

But you can have a properly working car...and still fail.  A dash light?  An oil drip?  Come on...

Jesus, an oil drip?  That's insane.  Lots of cars have a drip as they age and can safely drive for hundreds of thousands of kms that way.  I've had cars that wept from the rear main for most of their lives.

Yup, basically only dealers will risk selling cars now.  Going to be hard to sell a used car unless it's perfect, 100% perfect.

I'm sure lots of habibi garages will pass cars with a leak anyways though.

I think you mean habibi used car lots.  They'll pass anything so they don't have to fix it.   ;D

On the other hand, it YOU bring your car to a habibi garage, they won't pass a thing...so they can gouge you and make extra money.

Come on man, get it right!   ;D
