What's your car of the year 2015?
« on: December 17, 2015, 01:58:46 pm »
So, of the new cars launched this year, which is the one that you would most like to take home?

I have found it quite a disappointing year overall, what with many of my favourite cars (Ferrari 458, 911/911 GT3 R3, Audi R8, C63 AMG, Civic Type-R) having been "ruined" by turbos and/or automatic transmissions.  I'm sure that I exaggerate of course but I feel that some purity has been lost and does faster necessarily mean better?

It has been a pretty poor year for affordable "heroes" too (correct me if I wrong).

Next year looks promising though.  Having dismissed the new Focus RS as a Haldex-equipped ST turned up to 11 and thus just another 4-pot turbocharged uber hatch, I have read a bit more about it and it seems that the RS is about as far removed from the ST as the Escort RS Cosworth was from a mk5 1.4 Escort and the ST was quite a decent car in the first place!  There will also be a new Honda NSX, Aston Martin DB11, BMW M2 and Ford GT, so the future still looks rosy!

This year hasn't all been bad though.  We got a new Mustang with IRS, I'm specifically thinking of the Shelby GT350/GT350R and the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat (or was that last year).  707bhp and 650 lb ft of torque for virtually half the price of a BMW M5/Audi RS7/Mercedes E63 AMG.  God bless 'Merica!

Oh, I forgot about the new MX5, which deserves an honourable mention.  Lighter than the previous one, the looks have really grown on me and it definitely has potential.

In the real world, I recently drove the new Kia Sorento and it was not just good for a Kia, it was very good in its own right and when you get past the concept of a 30k+ Kia, great value compared to most of its rivals.  I've driven the latest Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot and I would struggle to justify the extra outlay compared to the Kia.

However, what they taketh away with one hand, they giveth with the other.  Having "ruined" the 911, Porsche finally let the Cayman have its day and the Cayman GT4 looks and sounds brilliant with a NA Flat 6 and a manual gearbox.  For once, I agree with Evo magazine and the Cayman GT4 would be my car of the year and the one new car from 2015 that I would like to take home.

I'd have to flip a coin between the GT350/350R and the Z06 (also introduced for 2015 correct?).

And heck, the Camaro SS would be a strong contender for 3rd place on my ballot behind those two.

Quite a year for Detroit.

The Z28 would definitely be up there as well....

GT350R, Z06-Z07 and Miata in a three way tie for me.  One is the best performance bargain around and a showcase for "adding lightness", one is a beast of a car that exists mostly to post low lap times, and well, the third is that TOO!!  Whooo-hoo!

For cars that most people might be able to actually buy, I'd vote Golf R and Miata.  It takes a lot to impress Chris Harris - and his glowing review of the Golf R says a lot.

The one that would be realistic to buy, the outback.  I just think it's a very well rounded vehicle.
The one that I dream about.  911 targa.   It's art on wheels.

Camaro. Any trim. The driving dynamics of that car (from what I keep reading) rival the best from anyone anywhere. The best ponycar ever, period.

The Z/28-Z/L1 models are going to be amazing.

I agree that if GM does the Z-28 treatment to the new chassis, the car is going to be a giant slayer of serious proportions.  The old Z-28 was amazing and the improvements to the new platform are nothing but awesome.

I actually went home last night and thought about this before making a decision.  There have been some pretty good vehicles come out in 2015, Porsche Cayman GT4, Chevy Corvette Z06, Mustang GT350, Mazda Miata, Cadillac CTS-V/ATS-V, Audi R8 and of course the VW Golf R.  One that never seems to be on people's list but was voted best drivers car is Mercedes AMG GT S.

But you know none of those would be my pick.  Majority of them are RWD and living here in NB means I wouldn't drive it for 6 months of the year.  A lot of them offer wicked performance but little else.

My pick would be the Mercedes S 65 AMG Coupe.  First off it's a V12, it offers all the performance I'll ever need (I don't track my vehicles), and gives me the most luxury any coupe can offer.  There's a back seat for my dog and 4matic AWD for winter driving.

It's certainly been a very interesting year in the auto world this year all things considered.

Firstly, in the $$ no object category, the AMG GT.
Just awesome...

In the "reasonably attainable" category, these two.
I have two loves:  one is for a big stupid honking V8.  The other is for a small, lightweight roadster.
It depends on the day which one I love best...

Oh.  I didn't really answer the question did I.  Car of the year,, not cars...
Since it was the one I actually bought.... MX-5.
