I'm sure the Porsche is the 'better' car, but I think it's splitting hairs.  I agree that the Jag is more fun, more raw, and quite frankly, looks more like a $130,000+ car than the Porsche does.  I'd never look at that Stormtrooper and think, "man, that thing must have cost north of $150gs!"

But all said, Porsche is deserving of its fame.

I'd likely take the Porsche, to be honest...but a 550hp supercharged V8...that'd be a fun weekly rental in Palm Springs, CA.

The 911 would be my choice hands down, because 911. The Jag is good looking and makes all the right noises but this is like Pat Boone sings Metallica, its a Jag thats supposed to be all hardcore and stuff but its a Jag still. Realitically, for the cost of the 911 though, you could buy a vette and a Z28 for track days.......and still have a nice chunk of change left over for a winter beater.

As a bonus is that exhaust noise.  I'm for sure a sucker for that - I'd probably pick the Jag even if it looked like a 2013 Malibu.  Thankfully it doesn't.  DROOL!

I used to think that, not just the sound, but also the entire driving dynamics of the car - I mean, who drops that kind of coin on the automotive equivalent of a juvenile delinquent... short of the GT500 or Hellcat, there isn't much that is as wild right out of the box as the F-Type R. but after spending a bit of time in it, I'm just grateful that it exists, and understand that Jaguar felt they had to be bold and unique in order to start garnering attention and having a unique character, and not one that people associate with crumpets and tea... it's completely the opposite of our stereotypes of stiff upper lip british upper class, and to me that just makes it that much cooler. I don't get to use this word often, but it is iconoclastic, and anything that can be described as iconoclastic has got to be hella cool.

I'm with you there.

The Jag is the car I would want to go hooning in.  The Porsche is the car I would want to run on the road course.

But all said, I'm with you - I'd probably get a Vette with the Z51 Package  (dry sump lubrication) and use that on the track.  Heck of a bang for the buck.  I wouldn't even bother stepping up to the Z06.

[EDIT: damnit Jonathan, i'd just written this out before I saw your post. I can appreciate where Jag is coming from re: the newfound aggressive, hoon-friendly demeanor, even if it means they lose a part of their traditionalist fanbase.]

+1 I'd choose the 911 because 911. But even without my 911 biases, I’m probably in the minority in thinking 1) The F-Type’s exhaust noise is just way too loud and over the top, and 2) styling-wise, I just don’t see it as the slam-dunk everyone says it is  - the rear end looks truncated and isn't balanced out by the front, IMO.

Seeing both on the road - I prefer the 911 by quite a bit.  The Jag looks pretty cool, but the 911 is very distinctive and looks more like a more well integrated package.  The Jag has some of the problem that the GT-R has in that non-enthusiasts looks and think "not sure what that is..."

And this might sound nuts, but I have to think the build quality on the 911 will be vastly superior to the Jag.  Not sure if that's true, but it's my gut feeling.

Both cars are stupidly expensive, and the 911 even more so.  The contrast with used cars was interesting except OMG ARE 87 911 TURBOS REALLY GOING FOR $135K?  No way!  WTF?  I'd heard they were creeping close to $100K and thought "sure, whatever..." but holy crap.  I have to show the missus..."if only I'd kept it, eh, hon?"  I thought I was making out like a bandit selling it for what I'd paid - zero depreciation seemed amazing!!  FML.

There's something to that, as despite being what is now an ancient design, the GT-R is still a formidable super car and despite some price increases, still a bargain compared to cars that dare to try to equal it.

Cars I'd really like that are blistering fast and cost way less than the 911?  GT-R, Z-06, C7-Z51, GT350R.  If GM brings another Z-28 based on the new Camaro it's sure to be one serious machine capable of opening can after can of whup-ass on cars costs far, far more.

But, since about the mid 80's, Porsche decided they were no longer playing against the Corvette (which the 911 used to priced similarly to) or other "plebeian" performance cars.  Nope, they were going seriously upmarket in terms of pricing, and well, except for them teetering on the verge of insolvency in the early 90's, it's worked out for them.
