5.43 L/100km in a hybrid Rav 4

This is pretty meaningless without knowing the circumstances.  Were there hypermiling techniques involved?  Rolling warm start?  Downhill with a tailwind?

People have done this with Escape Hybrids, but they definitely were hypermiling.
And some cretins think I hate cars.

^^^   You're gonna see a solid 6.0 bumper to bumper city in none winters months,  where a Rogue or Escape for example will be 11.0 city at best.  Plus it's significantly faster than any of the direct competitors.

I'm calling bullsh!t on those claims...

...that said, I've never seen our RX400h get lower than 19.0MPG (dead of winter) - which is 12.4L/100km - not too shabby for cold, 268hp V6e, and 4,600lbs.

Less desirable, sure, but it's still capable of driving all wheels...So let's leave the word "proper" out of it and all will be good.

Capable up to a certain speed. Unless changed for 2016 I believe AWD is only available below a certain set speed.

If it's the same system idea as in the RX400h we have, the rear wheels will work at highway speeds if slippage is detected.  Those rear wheels kept me from spinning out once while going 100km/h on the 401 when I hit glare ice.  Slight movement, lights and sounds going off, but I stayed tracking straight and true.  Far better recovery than a FWD would have been (like in the Corolla last winter en route to Ithaca).

The RAV4 would be my last choice if I were to be buying in this segment. It is truly ugly, expensive and has a CVT sewing machine transmission. I would purchase a 2.0L Ford Escape Ecoboost or Mazda CX-5.
