GPF (gasoline particulate filter) is now a thing.

As someone mentioned in the VW thread, modern GDI engines produce more soot than the port injected ones. To the point that MB is installing such filter in their S-class. Others will soon follow. I wonder if ad-blue for GDI is the next move?  ;)

I'd expect the technology to be available to avoid GPF all together by 2020...

So back to the future port injection? Add Atkinson cycle and a couple of motors, battery and a supercap and it's a win-win. Many current DI engines will suffer from valve carbon build up later in life, unless again there is a parallel port injection to wash the valves, e.g. the D4-S.
