Oh, good. More alphanumeric bull$hit.  ::)

Not to be confused with the G20, G35, or the Q80 or any other endless numbers of meaningless designations dreamt up by hyperventilating marketing departments.

Do the 3 and 4 character  names make it cheaper to produce nameplates??  Otherwise, why do it?

Didn't Acura almost disappear after they got rid of Integra and Legend?   OK, quick - what were the models they replaced them with?

Cheers,
John M.

I like the name Genesis for a specific model, but not for the brand. The chosen nomenclature is doomed from the start but I guess some senior VP said, "hey, Infiniti did it, so should we!".  ::)
Volvo did it first.

Infiniti started it at the brand's launch 1989 with the Q45 and M30, and later introduced the G20 and J30...

this biggest question out there now is...which luxury brand will Genesis kill?

-Acura? -Infiniti? -Cadillac?

Neither.  It will join them in purgatory.

It had meaning back then.  First letter was the car, the next 2 numbers were displacement.

Volvo's pretty meaningless for almost 2 decade.

Fair enough - at least the S (sedan), V (wagon), C (coupe), and XC (SUV) stand for something...

What was meaningful about 740 and 850?

What was meaningful about 740 and 850?

700 series, 4 cylinder; 800 series, 5 cylinder.  In the early '70s Volvo made more sense -- 144, 100 series, 4 cylinders, 4 doors, for example.

Overall the Europeans started this a long time ago, witness the Peugeot 302 of the 1930s, for example...

Then again, the names of cars often have nothing to do with body styles, number of cylinders, or engine displacement...

The alpha-numeric soup just makes it more confusing to keep track of everything.

My statement was more in relation to Infiniti.

J30 = J car with 3.0L
G20 = G car with 2.0L
Q45 = Q car with 4.5L
M45 = M car with 4.5L

Volvo did have some meaning like Scaerio mentioned.  242 was 200 series, 4 cylinder, 2 door.  Except the 242GT I had for a couple of years should have been a 282....   5.0L HO V8 out of a 89 Mustang with a T5 transmission and a Dana rear end sure as hell made it one heck of a straight line sleeper.  Although, if I was the one who did that swap, I would have done a GM LS engine.  Way lighter than the cast iron Ford lump.

I'll give you that.  Infiniti's different letters only translated to a different body style but had no meaning beyond that.
