A 75% drop in Jaguar sales since 2002
« on: October 27, 2015, 02:54:52 pm »
61,204 Jaguar cars were sold in America in 2002. The current pace in 2015 suggests only 15,000 calendar year sales, a 75% drop since 2002.

http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2015/10/jaguar-usa-september-2015-sales-figures-34-month-low.html

Kind of sad, but why would people buy an English copy of German cars?
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Not quite as drastic but Volvo is heading a similar way.

2002: 212 000
2014:   56 000.

I remember when the XJR looked like this, I wanted one badly.....today...there isn't one Jaguar in their lineup that I would take above anything in its class.

Lighten up Francis.....

Volvo is kind of going their own way. I'm wondering if the new stuff will turn things around or if they end up like Mazda, critically successful products that under-perform in the marketplace.

At least Land/Range Rover is doing very well.

I still want the Jaguar XE, and I bet the F-Pace will sell very well.

Jaguar just needs a line up consisting of a 5000lb SUV, a 6000lb SUV and a 7000lb SUV and sales will take off.

Seriously though, I think the brand has lost it's distinctive edge - Jags weren't just about numbers and specs.  They were emotion inducing works of art.  Now, meh, they're lost in traffic.

The last time they made one of those was in the 60s, wasn't it?

Yup. That XJR is the only Jag I want. Still want one.
You need a dealer network to sell cars

Volvo is known for safety, Lexus for quality and reliability, BMW for being fun to drive. Jaguar? F-type coupe is the only inspiring car in the lineup IMHO. 1 is not enough to move the brand up.

In 2002 the X-type made up over half of Jaguar's sales in the US. Jaguar hasn't had anything priced anywhere near that low in many years so that is certainly hurting them.

Lack of AWD has also hurt Jaguar in North America though that has more or less been rectified now.

I think Jaguar is on the right track but I agree that they are not as distinct as they used to be. I still wouldn't mistake any of their cars for German ones but the '95-'03 XJR is the definitely the best looking of the modern Jaguar sedans.

IMHO, Jaguar has some of the best looking cars around right now.  They are simply stunning, particularly the upcoming F-Pace.

However, I think lingering questions about quality and a lack of SUV offerings have hurt them in the past.

A lot of this drop off is likely due to Ford stepping in an essentially devaluing the lineup with cheap Mondeo rebrands back in the early 2000's.  Anyone remember the disastrous X-Type and S-Type?  They were sure sales leaders but they damaged the longterm standing of the brand itself.

Ford is the only reason Jaguar is still around. The X-Type was a pretty good seller as was the S-Type. Both, though unreliable in general, were reliable relative to Jaguar's previous designs. They sold due to their distinctive look, and inspite of the Jaguar reputation of unreliability.

I believe the anonymous styling of the current cars is hurting them far more than Ford's tenure.

I think if more people test drove a new Jag they might be inclined to buy one.  The problem (as mentioned above) is that the dealership network is virtually non-existant.  I really couldn't have cared less about Jaguar until I started to drive a few.  While they may not look like they did 20 years ago (what does?), they are still universally handsome cars and really nice to drive.  Any thing with an "R" badge and those noisy pipes is tons of fun.  I'm sure the reputation for questionable quality still hangs over their heads at Jaguar, suggesting that Lexus buyers are unlikely to go anywhere near the brand yet, I'd like to think that buyers of FGCs would be no worse off.

Surely the XE and F Pace will do good things for the sales figures.

40+ years ago I drove a Mk II, XJ6, XJ12 and a V12 E-type.    Didn't ever own one.       I see the road tests of the new ones here and in the UK Car magazine and I can see no reason to buy one, any of them.
