If I'm not mistaken, Toyota is the only car company (except GM with the Cruze and Nissan with the Sentra) to only offer "anemia" in driveline options? Honda Civic has the si, my 2.0 turbo in the Verano, Elantra GT is 173 HP (still not great, imho), a turbo 1.6 in the Kia Forte (nice engine, poor economy), 2.0T in the Jetta and Golf, Focus ST, Subaru WRX etc.

Toyota dropped the optional engine years ago, presumably because it didn't have a high sales rate. But that was in a different Corolla which would never have drawn buyers with much of a pulse, and besides, the optional engine wasn't that great either.

I can't help but think a performance related option would sell decently enough. However it isn't likely to happen. Toyota is only interested in performance/Motorsports that have no relation whatsoever with what they sell (ie; NASCAB tube frame race cars), because they think people are so stupid that will sell cars (and many are).  :(

Not only that, we're testing cars, your friends are driving normally.
Yes, all our numbers for every car are about 15% higher than you might get, but that's across the board, so the comparisons model-model are still relevant.

The article makes mention that the Corolla has direct injection.  As far as I know, both the 2ZR-FE and 2ZR-FAE use sequential port injection and not direct injection.

I would pick the Corolla as well between the two.  I think the North American Jetta is way too bland and I simply can't trust VW for reliability.  Although that new Civic with 1.5T sounds interesting.

If I was making the choice today, I'd probably end up with a Corolla. The Jetta looks so outdated in those pics and the lack of a decent set of rims definitely help that cause.

Right now in the compact segment I'd pick the 'Rolla - and not just because ours has been such a rock solid bit of transport kit.

And I think too that the 1,8L is not DI - thank gawd.  I want D4S or nothing.

LE ECO is the Corolla I'd get - priced the same as the VW.

You don't need to get the tech package.  In fact, without it the price is very comparable.

^^ They don't look much different to me. But the flashy wheels on the Corolla look ridiculous: huge wheel gap that makes the car look like it's on stilts.

Jetta looks handsome and classy. If you're not going to lower the car, then smaller rims and taller sidewalls look 100% better.

Why you are comparing a top of the line Corolla with 17" wheels with a base Jetta on 15s? ... the ride/handling contrast shouldn't be surprising.

As for the looks, here's apples to apples:

Still like the Corolla better...the design seems more modern and well resolved. The Jetta is plain Jane compared to the Corolla at this point.

And let's not forget, the Jetta Trendline+ was listed at 22k and at that price the Corolla S + upgrade package does come with a sweet set of rims....

i don't mind the looks of the Jetta...not saying i'd pick it over the Corolla, just saying that i kind of like my cars to look like cars, not swoopy spaceships (not that the Corolla is overstyled, but you get the point)...i also feel the same about SUVs...they should be functional, like the Forester or the previous gen Escape...now, many are trying to be swoopy coupe looking abominations.

Driven exclusively in the county, I was getting 5s.

A mixture of 60/40 was getting me 6s.

"Way better looking. It's the sexy secretaries car."

If the Corolla is supposed to be the sexy secretaries car... I would call the Mazda 3 the HOT secretaries car.

I think Toyota has done a good job with the Corolla.  And hopefully the Scion iM will do a good enough job in replacing the Matrix.  When combining the sales of the Matrix and the Corolla, they aren't that far from the leading Civic.  Looking forward to a comparo of the new Civic, the 3, and the Corolla.  Hopefully not in fully loaded trims (I know sometimes you don't have a choice), but a mid trim model.

I've been impressed with our 'Rollas fuel economy and figured the Gen 11 would make no gains there thanks to the slight size increase - and true that the gains haven't been huge - but significant when you consider the larger size and heavier weight.  The CVT is responsible for some of that as well as continued fine tuning of the engine management system - and some slight gains in the aero dept too.

What I'm most impressed with is the very small price increase with the new Gen.  Toyota's been on a tear with respect to value lately - the new Highlander is a LOT less $$ than the Pilot - jeez.  The Corolla used to be the highest priced model in the compact segment - and now it's very competitive.  They've done a lot lately - nicer interiors, avant-garde exteriors, terrific value, and continued rock solid reliability.
