We can finally get the Toyota Yaris vs Mazda Yaris comparison test we have always longed for.

The next time you are visiting a Toyota dealer ask the salesperson if they feel conflicted about selling
Mazda products. They guy I spoke to in Ottawa two weeks ago was irate.

" What's that, you love the new Yaris sedan but find it a little small? May I suggest you head down the street
to look at their Mazda 3?"

I wonder what the tag on the driver's door post says, which usually indicates the manufacturers name and where its built and what month. - will it say Toyota Motor Corp or Mazda Motors??????

it could be a little tougher for a Toyota salesman trying to say now how much better a Toyota product is over a Mazda product  :D

Not saying the Yaris is better but they are far from being equipped the same here's two examples I noticed, a/c is optional on the Corolla CE which is $17,865, push-button start you have to go to the Corolla S to get that at $19,780, probably quite a few other differences I suspect.
To take the 1.5L vs 1.8L engines, LED headlights, etc. to get push button start?!  No, sorry, just no.  Never.

In pics at least, I think it looks hideous!  What is it with a number of manufacturers now with the overly HUGE predator type front?  It seems to be a bad trend that is getting horribly overplayed now.

I miss the days when cars had no grills.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

If I was shopping in this segment, I would be curious to know if this car has Mazda's anti-rust treatment at the plant or Toyota's. I know Mazdas are fun to drive, but it's hard to see a model on the street that's more than five years old and not showing signs of rust, and for that reason I couldn't take a chance on this car unless Toyota assured me they did the treatment.

You've seen some rusty 2010s? I'd like to see some.

Which committee looked at the final design and said "Yes, that looks like a car we want to sell. We approve." I mean, even if if a 5th grader drew it, someone had to give it final approval.

:iagree:  omg that's an ugly front end !   ........ wow....... I know all about the ''under the skin'' argument, but; nope, can;t get past that grill............ wow   :bang:
Lovin the TRUCK !!!

Your surprised Dkaz?  There is always one comment about rust when the topic of Mazda's comes up.  Guess the CX-7 and CX-9 across the street are miracles.  Being over 7 years old and all.  And my brother in-laws first gen mazda3, still not one spec.

Toyota has really put a lot of effort into the Gen 11 Corolla.  I think in North America, the Yaris has been too closely priced to the Corolla, didn't offer much of a fuel economy advantage, and felt like a much less substantial car for about the same money - so the Corolla became the choice for most buyers.

With this - it makes sense for Toyota not to invest in the Yaris.  Re-badging the 2 gives them a product, but allows them to remain focused on the Corolla.

I have talked to two current Yaris owners that I know who were perplexed at the very idea that Toyota was not building the new one.

As regards saving development costs, the B segment is massive in the world wide context. It is the exact opposite of a niche .
Is Toyota really going to give up engineering and building its own cars to compete in a multi million car category?

I don't think so.  They have a lot of cars we don't see here - I suspect that in large markets where subcompacts sell well they will have their own - but in North America we'll get the rebadged 2.

It boggles the mind that Toyota could make such a mess of what 'was' a very nice front end. My only guess is that this was somehow part of an agreement between Mazda and Toyota, that allowed room for the Mazda 2 alongside of a similar offering from Toyota. Front end aside, the '2' is a very nice sounding small car. Meanwhile the Yaris is saddled with one of the uglier front ends 'ever'.

Love it!  Want to put a smiley, but for some reason with Windows 10 using Microsoft Edge, nothing happens when I click the icon.  Works fine with Internet Explorer on Windows 7?
