Once I catch my breath at the Yaris being essentially a re-badged Mazda, it sounds like a great car.  I particularly like the NHV achievements which I'd like to test myself.  The improvements in this area in the compact and sub-compact sectors have been quite remarkable and if what peter writes is accurate, it would seem that the new "Maris" is taking the crown at the moment.

It must be fairly tall to offer so much room in that footprint.  Tall = easy access.

So I'll put this on my list of must drives when asked about possible purchases at this end of the market.

Arriving now in Toyota showrooms is the 2016 Yaris Sedan, which, for all intents and purposes is the all-new Mazda2 sedan – a car that Mazda will not be selling in North America. Nor will they sell the hatchback version, as Mazda feels the CX-3 crossover, which is based on the fresh Mazda2 architecture, will scratch any and all “2” itches that our market might generate.

I don't believe this is entirely correct. I agree about no Mazda2 sedan coming to North America however my understanding is that the Mazda2 hatchback is still coming to Canada, just not to the USA. The introduction of the 2 hatchback in Canada was delayed for a few months due to Mazda wanting to focus their attention on launching the refreshed 6 and CX-5, plus the new MX-5 and CX-3.

I believe the hatch is coming to Canada, not sure about the sedan.  Guess we will find out more at the AutoShow (most likely the Montreal)

I know subcompacts are usually pretty ugly.  But man, that front end is pretty bad.  I would save up for the Corolla if I had to have a Toyota.  Or wait for the Mazda2.

This is one ugly car. Especially the front, but even the rest of the car looks rather lame. Heck, the outgoing Yaris looks better than this. Extra heck, the generation before Yaris looks better than this. This is probably worse than the Echo too. However, this car seems to be improved greatly as a driver, plus more features and once you're inside the car, you don't see the outside.

I see yet another manufacturer has subscribed to the "Darth Vader mask" school of grille design.  See Mitsubishi for examples.   

That being said, it does sound like a great little package and for a top end price of $20 K, very easy on the wallet.

It will no doubt do well urban areas.

The 2016 Yaris is powered by a 1.5L direct-injected four that sends 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm to the front wheels.

That's a nope.  I mean, at least they got rid of the 4-speed autobox, but that engine is still a lil' sh!t.

AND, the Corolla starts at a lower base price!

This may be the only vehicle available in Canada that looks better WITH front plates than without. Anything to distract from that really weird "catfish/vacuum" look this thing has.
