I recall when these came into the dealership. Collectively we felt that Toyota could have done so much more. The interior seemed to be made by Fisher Price.

To say the interior was big and hard plastic is and under statement.

This was supposedly inspired by the land cruiser but seems more like a kiddie variant than a true inspired copy.

Fail as Toyota could have done so much more here.

On a positive not the engine compartment large and easy to maneuver in. Buttons were easy to change with gloves on. Hard plastics are easy to wipe, but not really much easier than a better interior.

Past New (8yrs) Car Dealer for : BMW, Lexus, Nissan and Toyota
Past Used Vehicle Dealer: All Makes and Models. Seen a lot of it. Drove a lot of it.
Four-stroke Otto Engine 1876. Modern timer, pop-up toaster 1919 keep convincing yourself that you have the "latest appliance".

While I don't know much about trucks (enclosed or otherwise), Jeep seems to be way, way better at this game.

Quite true Redman, this was a Landcruiser, but like a Fisher Price copy. Expensive to modify, not as durable as a Wrangler offroad, sightlines that make a Camaro seem light and airy....I never got the attraction to these and Im a huge Landcruiser fan.
Lighten up Francis.....

Though the FJ is a bit more off road capable than the 4-Runner, but I'd go for the 4-Runner every time over the FJ.

Vehicle was a bit of a gimmick. Not a nice drive in strong winds. Sucked the gas due to high profile. Well put together and great resale value.

My boss has a 1980 FJ. Parked beside my WRX here: http://tinyurl.com/qfufpz8

Absolutely.

While I don't know much about trucks (enclosed or otherwise), Jeep seems to be way, way better at this game.

Anyone who is a little bit mechanically inclined, that can see past the Toyota brand reputation and peek at the undercarriage would quickly come to the same conclusion. And anyone having concerns buying a Jeep would be much better off getting a Xterra (2010+) or a Tacoma if wanting absolutely a Toyota product if they can live with having a pickup instead of a SUV.
