I believe Mazda has addressed those issues since the 2nd gen. Mazda is now offering a seven year unlimited mileage anti-perforation rust warranty.
for comparison's sake, VW has offered a 12 year/unlimited mileage warranty for...as long as i can remember (10+ years?).

Correct.  VW uses galvanized steel panels.

I'm yet to see a 2nd generation Mazda3 with rust on it. Did you?

Someone in Vancouver on BCMazda3 is selling an 04 Mazda 3 GS automatic with 180k well maintained and absolutely no rust for $2500. In fact, 95% of rusty Mazdas I've seen have out of province plates.

I haven't. They're all over the place here and my brother has a '10 that is rust free (in Toronto).

to be fair, that's in Vancouver...our friend has a Mazda 3 (i think it is about a 2007 model) and it very badly rusted...a coworker also has the same car and it too is quite rusty.

i think if someone were to get it oiled every year, it would likely be much better, but i suspect people who "oil" their car (Krown, Oil Gard, etc) are in the minority...perhaps on some cars, it isn't too big of a deal, but on others, it can be.

In my opinion, the one thing I've come to detest about my new Mazda 3 is the lack of a trunk release on the key fob.  Since I have a hatchback, there isn't even a trunk release inside the car either!

To add insult to injury, due to the way the proximity key works, if I'm inside the car with the key, the trunk can't be opened by someone who is trying to access it.  Since there's no release inside, I either have to pass them my keys or physically get out of the car myself and open the bloody thing.  WTF Mazda......

Really?  Double pressing the unlock button doesn't do anything?

I our Mazdas the hatch behaves like all the other non -drivers doors.

If I am sitting in it with the engine off, it unlocks the trunk.  The second the engine is running (even in park) the keyfob is deactivated.  The driver's side door unlock doesn't control the trunk release either.  It's infuriating.

That's awful. In the Golf with KESSY the hatch is controlled by the central locking. If the car is locked and you access the hatch and then close it, it automatically relocks. Works very well.

You check with the dealer if there is a workaround?  they can reprogram it?  Since mine has a trunk its different.  Even my first gen Mazda6 that had the sport hatch, operated like a normal trunk.

Simply look at the back wheel arches on the 2nd generation and you can see that they are constructed very differently than 1st generation.  The metal is pressed together and folder over in a lip, rather than glued together in the 1st generation (which caused all the issues)

I have a 2010 Mazda 3 bought in summer 2009.  Fully past 6 years now and no sign of rust anywhere and I live in the heavily salted GTA.

100K on the odo, and it looks and feels much like the day I bought it.  The only issue I had was a loose trim piece which was promptly fixed under warranty.

Its a very fun car to drive, and I would strongly consider buying another one  when the day comes that I'm tired of it.

Which trim piece, and how long after purchase?  Which dealership?  Most are very adamant that trim pieces (more particularly towards rattles/squeaks) are not covered under any warranty.

In my experience, trim pieces/rattles/squeaks are indeed covered under warranty, but a shorter one. Usually 3-6 months or so.

Interesting. Does the 3rd gen rear hatch have an actual handle or does it release with a solenoid?

I didn't have this issue in my Mazda 5 but the rear hatch had a handle.
