Looks less cutesy than the previous generation.  For once I like the a generation has gotten bigger.  Seems to fit more in in the compact CUV class now.  Towing 5500lbs is mighty impressive.  Rear seats that slide and recline is nice too.  Hopefully it won't be much more then the previous generation.  I could live with $2000-$3000 increase per trim.  Your getting so much more than the previous gen.

Agreed.  I really like the styling. Looks like the windows are a decent size compared to some of the CUVs out there.

However, I bet that tow rating is more in line with European standards and not North American.  I expect a 3000-3500RPM rating.

I wonder if this will be nearly identical to the 2017 Q5 when they both hit the ground.  The new Q will be on the MQB platform with, reportedly, a new 2.0 engine etc etc.

Looks very nice indeed.  A lot of upgrades over the old version and if they keep the price the same, I think it might be competitive.

The price and size were the two limiting factors on the current generation.  With the added features and size I think this will solve the problem.  Adding a diesel option will definitely meet the current demand for a diesel compact SUV without a luxury badge.

I thought North America was going to get a Mexican-built, 3-row version of the outgoing Tiguan....makes me wonder when the "rest of the world" Tiguan will show up in Canada/US.

Wow.  That's a pretty good looking CUV.  I'm not a huge fan of the Cylon-type face on some versions but if it comes with diesel + 4motion, it will likely be top of the list when the time comes to replace our A4 wagon.

The three row CUV is going to be built in Chattanooga and will be larger than the Tiguan. The new Tiguan will remain a five seater and will be built in Mexico.

I agree with Johnny here that, though sales were decent, the Tiguan was often slammed for being too expensive and too small.  While the update look incredible, and I quite like everything I'm reading, I disagree that a price increase would be warranted or acceptable.  And I think tpl is bang on as to why - it has to have enough of a difference between itself and the Q5, else sales will simply leech from one to another.

Base price may rise, and I'm ok with that since I'm not a base-price kinda guy.

...but the GTE, loaded, cannot top $50,000 based on Q5 pricing - nobody would shell out that kind of $ for a VW when an Audi-equivalent is available.

Now, I do expect the GTE to be a lower-volume model, and so the pricing may be acceptably higher on that basis, but the Tiguan cannot jump in price from where it is.  Minor bump, perhaps...but not a jump of $2-3k.

I expect Trendline to be around $28k to start, but Comfortline will have to be around $31,000, and Highline no more than $38,000 before those silly option packages.  If the Tucson is the new Target, or even the Escape's pricing, I could see an 'every option checked' model being $41,000.  At that price, however, I'm hanging my head in shame that someone would drop that kind of cash - just as I am for the Escape and Tucson.

As for the diesel, would ya'll be accepting a 150hp Tiguan (even if it does have 236lb-ft)?  ...or, based on that towing capacity, do we think that potentially it'll get the 3.0L V6 hunka hunka dino-juice burnin' love?  I see that as unlikely, but odder things have happened - we know the V6D fits in the Q5.

Guess we will see.  The Audi Q5 has a tow rating of 4400lbs in North America with the 2.0L gas engine.  So with this being a different platform, maybe a bit more towing with the diesel?    But I would be quite happy with the 4400lbs!

The '17 A4 is getting a 190 hp diesel which I think would be appropriate for the Tiguan as well.

The Q5 starts at over $40k so VW has a bit of room to raise prices but that said I think we can look to the MkVII vs MkVI Golf as to how this will play out. Moving production to Mexico gives VW more flexibility to lower prices on the low end and add feature content on the high end.

Are you sure about that? I thought that the new Q5 would be on the MLB 2 platform (like the new A4 and Q7).

That is what I thought.  Tiguan is transverse mount platform whereas Q5 is longitudinal mount platform, correct?

Right. I don't see why they would move away from that architecture.

Source?  From what I read, the 190hp A4 will be a de-tuned 2.0T, and the 'up-tuned' version will make 252hp.  In Euroland, the diesel is also a 3.0L V6, but its output is just 218hp and 295lb-ft, which is a far cry from the Q5 TDI's 240hp/428lb-ft.
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2017-audi-a4-prototype-drive-review

Edit:
I found this article, which supports your assertion that the lower 'tuned' 4-pot is the diesel:
http://www.carscoops.com/2015/07/2017-audi-a4-will-offer-diesel-version.html

Still, with competing sources, I'm not sure which one is the more valid.  My understanding was the 190hp 4-pot was a petrol working on the Miller cycle to achieve incredible fuel efficiency without resorting to diesel or any urea after-treatments.

Why are you assuming there will only be one 190 hp motor?

Whatever engine choices they offer, I'm sure they'll offering something that will be completely adequate for potential buyers.  I like the larger size like everyone else.  It was just too small inside when I was interested in one back in 2011. Maybe I'll pick up a 2018 model if my MDX dies around that time.
