I'm wondering about something a bit more practical.  What's the total height of this thing with its doors fully extended upwards?  The doors look like they would smash right into my garage door opener.

The way i am looking at the model 3 is like this. If it is priced closed to the BMW and has the same features (Heated seats, leatherette, sunroof, memory, good audio) as the BMW minus the gas costs then why not.
A lot about the Model 3 is unknown, however TESLA has set high expectations based on how the current model S performs. I guess i am hoping for a baby Model S with 200m range.  If its not then i may reconsider. However i have a strong feeling that this one will be a baby S. TELSA has always been the company that surprises positively with its technology

Elon likes to make his life difficult.  Why not just use regular doors?

Those doors won't have storage or stuff will fall out, will smash into things, won't close because the electric motors will fail etc etc.

^ Because they're really cool.

Given the choice between this and a Range Rover, BMW or Mercedes SUV? I'd take this. Easily.

There was a crapstorm within Tesla over retractable door handles for Model S. Many ppl in the company just couldn't see why there were so much money and resources going into them. Musk won then and now it seems no one questions him on doors any more.

Model X doors make nice shade when open up completely.  :)

I suppose the doors will still open up, even with a sheet of ice or snow on top of them; we'll see soon enough.

Just make sure to park it outside or in a garage with a REALLY high ceiling.

I know some SUV's have memory settings on the max height it can open when you press the rear hatch/trunk open button.
I am sure the TESLA will have some version of this implemented.

Agree, that will be a issue for people that live in subdivisions with small 2 car or 1.5 car garages. It will need a memory setting for high and width combined for its usual parking space and then buttons to open it more or less if the vehicle is not in its usual parking spot.
Seems like extra work.

Just because it is TESLA they may put sensors on the doors that account for this and automatically open to the max limit without hitting other objects..

The video says it only goes out about a foot so width is not a major issue. OTOH snow may fall in the cabin as the door actually kinda folds  while opening.

This.  It doesn't need much width.  I saw a video a while ago demonstrating this.

remind me why we are subsidizing really rich people's toys?

We are?? The canadian government is subsidizing Tesla??? If the US gvnmt does, why the hell should we care?

While at it, remind me why we are subsidizing the oïl industry which makes billions in profits.

the Canadian govt is giving purchasers of any tesla thousands of dollars to buy one, so yes the canadian govt is indirectly subsidizing tesla.  what part of this equation do you not understand? even tesla canada puts these discounts on their pricing.

Not only Tesla then, I got $8K back when I leased my Leaf; plus anothe $750 for the charging station and installation.  :D

To add to the failure to have rational discussions on this subject on this website, despite these matters coming up every time ev's are mentioned:

The vast sum is largely due to polluters not paying the costs imposed on governments by the burning of coal, oil and gas. These include the harm caused to local populations by air pollution as well as to people across the globe affected by the floods, droughts and storms being driven by climate change.

So the cost to clean up after a storm = subsidy to the oil industry?

Give me a break.  ::)

Not sure if the storm is a viable cost relation, but the smog caused in places such as LA, would cause hospital visits to increase, which i think would be a definite co-relational cost.  I think that would be similar to the fines for tobacco companies.  Look you put people in the hospital and that costs money.

I think the subsidies are a justifiable expense to get them off the ground.  Basically its research money and its not like there is alot of that floating around.

Cheers
