I get why this thing exists...I just don't get why it exists now (as opposed to after the Model III is out)

i can see where i'm going to really want this company to fail if they don't make a serious run at building an affordable car.  in other words, remind me why we are subsidizing really rich people's toys?
Without writing a lengthy essay on how Tesla showed everyone in the auto world that it was possible to make a desirable battery powered car, I'll just say here that there is a trickle down effect and not only we have the rich to pay for innovation, research and development, but we will also get to drive these cars eventually when they depreciate enough for our budgets, and that is better for everyone (including environment and society as a whole) than ending up with luxury gas guzzlers because there is no other choice.

Because there is no competition in the segment and they will price it as high as the market will bear. They need cash to invest in Gigafactory. Once that is up and running there will be cheap enough battery cells to make a budget 200+ mile sports EV a reality.

Without writing a lengthy essay on how Tesla showed everyone in the auto world that it was possible to make a desirable battery powered car,

Everyone in the auto world already knew how to make a desirable battery powered car.  ::)

The problem was (as Tesla is finding out) is they aren't profitable enough to justify building them (yet).

Sure, everyone knew it could be done but only Tesla got it done.

Not profitable even with the government and taxpayers covering the costs. Love the product but its not sustainable.

We are?? The canadian government is subsidizing Tesla??? If the US gvnmt does, why the hell should we care?

While at it, remind me why we are subsidizing the oïl industry which makes billions in profits.

And which is one of Canada's leading employers.  And leading exports.  EVs?  Not so much.

No, sure, but why would we expect that; we are not subsidizing that industry.

My point is, the US gvnmt is subsidizing Tesla just like any government subsidize most companies that invests and create jobs. What's so different with Tesla?

Well you are subsidizing that industry with gov't rebates on EVs.

The question is if I'd be ready to put down a few grand and then wait 2 more years. I guess it will depend on what the car will look like and what Nissan will have shown just before the Model 3 debut.  ;)

No.  It's $45K+taxes-$8,500.  The rebate comes after all taxes.

How will Tesla guarantee currency fluctuation for a car 2 years down the road?  If the currency drops, they are going to eat the difference?

Let's be realistic - how big is the market for anything over $100,000 Cdn, which may be the low end M X?

Once early adopters have snapped up the high end M Xs, there just won't be the demand - Gigafactory cost reductions or not.

Eventually, probably sooner than later, Musk will run out of other people's money.

Ask Smith(EV) trucks, how things went for them.
