The CX3 is really nothing more than a smaller Mazda3 with a jacked-up suspension and an all wheel drive option. Still, I like it.

Drive it - you'll change your mind.  I'd take a CX-3 over a Mazda3 Sport any day.

The interior feels smaller than my Mazda 3 though.  Maybe it's the design but the back seat in particular feels really cramped.

Depends on what you're going for...it's not cramped for 2, though I haven't sat in both back-to-back.

I understood it was actually a Mazda 2. That would also explain the lack of interior space.

It is not really jacked up. What's the ground clearance on CX3? Around 150-160 mm, IIRC. Same as 1992 Corolla.

It's easy to forget the CX-3 is based on the Mazda2, as they used "3" in the name.  As much as I like the CX-3, the much better carg area of the HR-V would probably win me over were I comparing the two.  In the segment, the not-quite-in-the-segment-but-close-enough Crosstrek would win my money - just a bit larger, tons of ground clearance and Subaru AWD.

But, they're all nifty little hatches with some form of AWD that I am starting to see lots of.

I was a hater until I drove a Mazda3 GT in a comparo. The screen location really works well, and you're not stuck with a high, blocky dash like the Corolla's.

How do the LED headlights compare to a car that has stock HID headlights? Night driving safety is important to me.

Depends on what you're going for...it's not cramped for 2, though I haven't sat in both back-to-back.

It's 7.3" shorter than Mazda 3.  I do have to say that it looks great though.

a lot of that loss comes in the front end (not quite as clown-shoed as the Mazda3).  Yes, the trunk and back seat are tight, but not appreciably worse than the Mazda3 hatch.

Lady No-san's mother went from a Mazda3 hatch, and then when Lady No-san's father bought the 2001 911 Turbo, his then-current 2014 CX-5 GT went to Lady No-san's mother.  She hated it and traded it in early (lease) for the CX-3 - the price difference was something like $11/month saved...the CX-3 is expensive, IMO, for what it is compared to other Mazda offerings.  So she now drives a loaded CX-3.

How does she feel about the CX-3?  She fricken LOVES it.  Absolute love.  The old, old folks (90 and 92) find it much easier to get in/out of the CX-3 than it was for both the CX-5 and the Mazda3 hatch, and neither complains of lack of room in the rear seats.  YMMV.
