Corolla S stands for sensible...not sport
the base CE with manual is the perfect "beater" that doesnt break down

I called my 08 CE the CheapEdition.

But if you compare to my old 91 LS which was mid trim with the 08 CE, the 08 had A/C, power windows and door locks, keyless entry, and cruise control.

Try finding a base Corolla on a lot.  Dealers ain't got any, and don't want any.  With a well-equipped car for about $20K, why bother stocking a $16-17K stripper?

Our 2009 is a CE "enhanced package" that I thought was the vest value for money in the line up then.  The LE was a $2K price jump and didn't really include a lot more - ours has A/C, cruise, keyless, power windows.

With the 2016, I would definitely go for the LE ECO.  No way I'd want either a manual or conventional auto - the new CVT is great.  (Did I really write that?!!)  The ECO is about $800 over the LE, and given the mileage I've personally seen the ECO version record, the $800 would be paid for quite quickly.  (Close friends of ours have one, and it seems nearly impossible to get higher than in the mid 4's on the highway...)

That is what a Prius can do.
I guess that a difference between 6 year old car and a new car .

I'd still probably get the manual, bit the LE CVT makes a strong argument.

I know, I know, not as good resale, manuals = dodo, but still.

^ Me too. The CVT is the best one I've tried. Very nice interior and features too.

By far - they've nailed it.

I wonder how theirs differs from other CVTs?

I have no idea.  I thought initially that it's thanks to their long experience with them just allowed refinement, but that's with planetary boxes in the hybrids, not "conventional" CVT units.

I thought about how Subaru had terrible CVTs not long ago and then presto, they were suddenly among the best on the market.  Working with Toyota?

Toyota doesn't like to jump on bandwagons.  They're a little late to the CVT game, and better for it.  Same for DI engines, etc. Taking their time to develop systems prior to introduction...

To trim parasitic losses in its new “intelligent shifting” CVT, Toyota designed an engine-driven oil pump with a second discharge port. The low-pressure outlet handles transmission lubrication. A variable high-pressure port supplies the hydraulic force needed to clamp the steel belt tightly between the driving and driven pulley halves. This smart pump arrangement avoids slippage while minimizing power consumption. In addition, the Corolla S’s CVT has a sport mode, paddle shifters, and seven artificial “gears” to address two classic gripes: the rubber-band effect (engine revs, car speed eventually catches up) and the no-driver-involvement issue.

Drove a loaner base S version CVT. Very nice car, nice features great drive and prices.  Was impressed with the CVT operation and I would easily purchase one if I was looking for a compact car. Can't beat owning a toyota and it's reliability.

Toyota's nailed CVT operation.  I'd have my fingers crossed that it's built for the long haul - and if anyone's going to give us a long lived unit, it should be Toyota.

So many posts on a Corolla news piece!  It's pretty clear that they're turning things around at Toyota!

It's a huge improvement over the previous car.. The S trim's price and equipment is pretty darn impressive.
