So, the new MX-5 is fast. We tracked one against a 2015 model yesterday and the difference shocked us.

Nice review, sure. But totally useless to me as it was detached from reality.
That's why I never miss Wing's day-to-day reviews because they show what each car is like to live with day in and day out.

Sure, for a fit under-30 flogging-other-peoples-cars-fun-seeking auto journalist, the choice is clear. And it's the right choice when you consider the contenders as pure "toys-for-boys"

If you start factoring in the multitude of other real-life conditions (driver size, ride quality, driving conditions, budget, etc...), the choice isn't as clear anymore.

The excessive noise of the Toyobaru and painful ingress-egress makes it an automatic no-go regardless of its other virtues. And so on...

I like the MX-5 on its own merit but for me it's not THE absolute answer.

I've logged nearly 1,000 kms on that ND; 1,200 on that FR-S and over 2,500 kms on 2015 Mustangs in various trims and engines.  I've had the FRS and MX5 on the track and I've had all of them at home, parked in my garage, at out running daily errands.

I'm nearly 40, have a wife and kid and I'm far from fit these days and I treat press cars as if they were my own.  So, what do you want to know?

I offered up the information I thought was helpful to someone shopping in this category.  If luggage or rear seat space is your number one priority, none of these cars is a sensible choice.  They're designed to be fun, stylish and make an owner feel good; qualities we aimed to reference and evaluate.  Our driver / evaluator size varies from solid troll to bean pole to husky hockey player.

If it's to be the only car for a family, the buyer should check his or her priorities and reevaluate.  But I could happily rock any of these as a second car and my year-round daily driver.

RE: MX-5 - The hardtop would add so much weight. Way too much weight. It literally takes 1.5 seconds to lower the top right now. Why ruin it?

If I were to buy a MX-5 again, it has to come with a removable hardtop as in NA and NB (not NC) to make it usable in the winter...leave the top in garage during summer and put it on during winter...have you driven a miata in the winter with only the softtop???...frost will form on the dash for the three winters that I had mine...I daily drove it year around (only have means for one car)...
its ok with only the soft top if you have two or more cars I guess

Not sure where in Canada you live, but I happily drove my soft top NC for 4 winters in Southern Ontario with the only issue being ground clearance (due in no small part to the fact that I also lowered my car).  Frosty dashboard?  Never saw that in my car.

I commuted in my Miata, did client visits, family visits, errand running and pleasure drives.  The only thing it couldn't do was hold my growing family, so it got ditched.  An FRS/ BRZ would do that now while my son is still young enough to fit in the back seat.

Everyone's finding this.  The grousing about the 155hp ignores that the car is quite fast.

Absolutely, especially when driven back-to-back with the NC - -the way (and where in the rev range) the new car makes its power is everything here.

The new MX5 can make mediocre drivers (ie. Me!) look like heroes on the track.

I'd suggest more like apple, banana and pulled pork sandwich.

re: mustang ecoboost - they should have detune the 4 cylinder and made it the entry model and leave the V6 in the middle

Nope...they should have put the 2.7 Ecoboost here. Same thing with the Explorer, why on earth would they drop this under-powered engine on a heavy CUV.

Don't they have enough little hatchback golf kart things to offset it?? Seems to me they could have gone with a two pronged attack here instead they have the V6 and the Ecoboost cannibalizing each others sales and confusing people as to which one is better. V6 should have been the low end, rental spec one at about 300hp, the 2.7 should have been around the 350-400 pony range and the V8 should be in the 450-500 range. The performance pack should be available in all as well as all the luxo options.
Lighten up Francis.....

They sold ~750k F Series last year alone. It takes a lot of Fiestas and Focii to bring up that average. It really is a question of a mpg here a mpg there just to avoid fines.

Fun read gentlemen! I liked the tone of the article, and you made it perfectly clear what you were looking for. I can't wait to find out where the incoming Camaro would fit in this equation.

Who put gas in the Mustang?

Are you implying they were running 87 octane in the 'Stang????  ;D Surely not!
