Every article about the tC reminds us that this car is based on the Avensis. Why doesn't Toyota just 'go for it' and sell the
whole Avensis line up in North America?

...because "Corolla".  That's why.  Hell, the Matrix did nothing to help surge Corolla sales.

That interior, though.  So cheap, much plastic, many dated, very yuck, such boring.

The new iM is the avensis

For years I've been thinking that the Avensis would be a great entry into the Lexus brand in NA.  Think EL, CSX, ILX, Integra, Volvo S40...

The iM is based on the Toyota Auris, nee Corolla, not the Avensis.

"Have a mechanic scan the tC’s engine control computer for signs of hidden trouble codes, which could be evidence of a sensor-related issue. These may not necessarily cause a check engine light to illuminate. Trouble with throttle position and mass air flow sensors aren’t unheard of, so this simple checkup may reveal a potentially pricey repair bill that’s waiting to surface. Note that bad sensors can also cause excessive fuel consumption and poor or sporadic performance."

Surprised to hear about engine trouble since I thought these were basically Camry engines.

The real issue regarding the tC is that I don't see many of them on the road. It seems that sales were poor.

More of a precaution. A few mentions of wonky sensors. nothing worth going into detail over, but a computer scan takes 10 seconds and costs as little as nothing, so worth a mention. peace of mind, and all that. Toyota or not, it's still an engine, and can still have issues.

I drove my friend's tc when they came out. I would not recommand it. The steering feel has no substance. It's numb. The whole driving experience is bad. It just has nothing special. After the amazing last gen Celica I don't get it. They changed his transmission once. I don't remember but I think it wouldn't get into gear.

An airflow or throttle position sensor is easy to diagnose and replace - not akin to a "real" mechanical engine problem.

Of course it's the Estate/Tourer/ Wagon version of the Avensis and Auris that we really need.

Where is the specific reference for this ???  ... and please don't say Toyota Nation.  :)

Sales were poor because distribution has been NIL.

ITs an amazing value proposition for that low to mid $20K buyer providing they know about it.

 ^^^^^^

"Sales were poor because distribution has been NIL." Huh  ??

I see more Tesla P85D cars on the road yet the closest Tesla dealer is 40Km away. I have 3 Scion dealers within minutes from my house but yet I see less Scion products combined then I do Tesla products.
People will find the car they want and desire even if access to dealerships are inconvenient and scarce.

Its a 2 door Corolla.....why would this interest anyone?? People interested in Corolla do not want anything remotely sporty because its scary, mysterious and foreign and people who want a sporty car are not going towards a Corolla. Its in the automotive no mans land.
Lighten up Francis.....

They are also Toyota stores that carry very little product and next to nothing in promotion and support.   For most Canadian buyers Scion is an unknown and most associated with the xB series from the States.

Comparisons to Tesla is hilarious.

Closer to a 2 door Camry.  It's a great value.  No finance support though.

The comparison is only related to your "Sales were poor because distribution has been NIL." comment. Point being that I see more Tesla product on the road which has little to no distribution in many parts of Canada and cost 5x more vs Scion which has better distribution, even if limited in some Toyota dealerships. That is where the comparison stops.

There is no Scion distribution in my part of Canada.  :)

Telsa is FAMOUS.  Elon and Telsa are front page news continuously for better or worse.  They are a rich person's status symbol.  Brand recognition is MONSTER.

Scion in Canada on the flip side is a complete unknown.  I suggest a TC to young ladies and they have no clue to what it is.  To most pedestrian buyers Scions are weird shaped little boxes from the States.

Ultimately, I think Toyota Motor Japan needed production for some of their Japan plants so they decided to expand the brand into Canada.  It's not working.

I never understood the Scion thing.  A "downmarket" brand?  WTF? Toyota's been making cars for young people forever, they didn't need a "young" brand.  Just build a great Celica and some other stuff and sell them at the Toyota dealer.
