I believe they have been putting that 1.4T together with the 7 speed DSG in Golfs in Europe for a few years now...maybe even in the Euro Passat as well.

There is a perception thing in NA about small engines but now GM has a turbo 1.4 in the Cruze it must make the selling a bit easier.
I remember some years back someone on this forum being sarcastic about engines smaller than Coke bottles...and that was for a 2litre 4.

The Cruze (i believe from memory) turns off the A/C under full throttle. For some reason that bothers me.
Are you kidding?!?!  I would LOVE that.  If I'm under full throttle, I need all the power that's available.  I can live with some warmer air for a few seconds.  How long do you stay on WOT?!?!?!

I believe most cars are designed to turn off A/C at full throttle. And have been for a long time.

My Mazda does it and I wouldn't be surprised if other cars do it. As it stands right now, when the A/C is on, the compressor cycles on for 10 seconds, off for 10 seconds. I think the rule of thumb is that A/C compressors can rob 15-20% of power from 4 cylinder engines. That's huge in a small engine. My Mazda 3 often uses 15% more fuel when A/C is on, compared to roughly 5-7% in my Honda Odyssey (with one compressor on).

It's about time the 2.0 engine was retired - I remember looking at VW`s in early to mid 90`s and this was the base engine.   Even against its competition at that time, this engine was underpowered.

Back then the base engine was the 1.8 version which was even slower.

Agreed.  I rented one 6 years ago in Scotland and started looking for the sweet spot where the engine had some umph!.  Never found it.  Mileage was no screaming hell either.  Amazing that VW kept it around this long or that the customer base tolerated it.  I am not a power fanatic (anymore) but the engine just always seemed flat.

Cheers,
John M.

The 2.Slow felt fine, when I had my 1.6L 102 HP 1991 Toyota Corolla.

115 hp out of a 2.0L.  That is especially weaksauce.

Honda is getting >140hp out of a 1.8L.  Hell they're getting 130hp out of a 1.5L.
Mazda is getting 155hp out of a 2.0L.
Hyundai is getting 138hp out of a 1.6L, and 145hp out of a 1.8L

I can't believe the ancient 2.0 has hung around this long.  Good Riddance.
