In the 80s the 944 Turbo was one of the most desirable sports cars, period.  Nearly as quick as the 911 Turbo, and in most hands faster around a circuit, it was a great car.  Porsche originally made all four cylinder cars - there is some homage to history by using a flat four.  Combined with their long turbo experience and these might be wicked machines.

I have trouble believing that Porsche's numbers will be below those made by Subaru's FA20F and EJ257 (except in the projected GTS trim).  This is Porsche - the numbers must be high.

This isn't speculation, it's based on cold, hard science, people!!

Seriously? Obviously Porsche is capable of putting out higher numbers but they have to maintain a meaningful separation between the Boxster/Cayman and the 911.

This was one of the reasons that I just bought my 2015 Boxster.  I wanted a 6 cylinder. :)

I'm sure the 6 cylinders will remain in the line up, IMO this is a move by Porsche to go down the price scale and increase sales with an existing platform. A base Boxster starts at $59k, imaging the interest if a turbo 4 started below $50k

...I'd wager the Porsche brand would be diluted, much like the CLA is diluting the MB brand.

...which is to say, not as much as I would have thought.

Nothing wrong with 944s.  I did like them, especially with the turbo.

The Porsche brand survived the SUV and CUV phase.

Indeed. Replace "survived" with "gorged on endless profits".

My one concern is that
1. the four will sound like ass
2. won't be as revvy as the flat 6

1) ALL fours sound like ass IMO.  Some are less ass-y than others.

2) With boost?  I highly doubt it.  What would be an acceptable rev max for you?

944 Turbo didn't sound as nice as the 911 models, but holy hell was it fast in it's day.

As long as the engine gives great performance, people will like it.
