In a move that surprises no one, the new motor is the 2.0L turbo four-cylinder mill recently launched in the NXt compact crossover, and it goes to work in the base IS 200t model, making the same 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque as it does in the NX.

Next up the ladder is the IS 300. What this trim’s name doesn’t tell you is that it uses the same 3.5L V6 found in the IS 350, but tuned for 255 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

Finally, the IS 350 returns as the top trim, with its version of the 3.5L making the same 306 hp and 277 lb-ft as it did in last year’s model.

All-wheel drive returns, but only in IS 300 and 350 trims, leaving the 200t as a rear-driver.

That's insane.  Absolutely insane.

The de-tuned 3.5L will hardly be better on gas, and is ridiculously underpowered given its displacement.  The 2.0T already comes with AWD in the NX200t, so why not here?  It's obviously a bean-counter push to get folks into the IS350, but what the :censor:, Lexus?!  Here, take an extra 2 cylinders with 1.5L of extra displacement for 14hp at the expense of 22 lb-ft of torque (the lower figure of which will likely come on at higher RPMs).

The real winner here is the 2.0T RWD, assuming you live somewhere warm.

I'm absolutely dumbfounded here, unless there's a massive price drop in the base trim and the IS300 AWD comes in at the same price as the current IS250 AWD.  Even then, this is just nuts to me - copying Mercedes's prior model of the C250, C300, and C350 (with the C300 being a de-tuned 3.5L).  Dumb-as-fack to me.

I want an IS350 turbo that makes 500hp.  My IS line up...

IS200t - base model turbo tuned for 240hp or so.

IS350 - 3.5V-6 revamped to make 330-340hp.

IS-F - twin turbo V-6 making 475-500hp.

Terrible chosen engine options...Lexus is going to lack sales and eventually somewhere in the mid cycle is going to changes the engine/drive combinations if they need snow belt market.

This is kind of confounding. Wtf are they doing packaging wise?

I wonder if it's an engine availability issue.  As production ramps up they'll add AWD to the turbo.

Could be packaging too with the turbo  and front drive line.

Or Lexus could be off their rocker.

I guess it depends on how pricing is....if the IS300 AWD is same money as the IS250 AWD then it might work out okay...but I just don't understand the move.

not a fan of what they did with the engines here (2 versions of the 3.5L)...seems like a stupid idea.

255hp is a strange number. Even Camry's V6 makes around 270hp. So maybe they dropped the DI and added some Atkinson timing mode for fuel efficiency? That would actually make sense as not everyone buying a Lexus is looking for top power, while many expect a smooth and quiet V6 under the hood, which may be more reliable than the turbo 4 and DI 3.5, in theory.

I'm thinking some buyers want a V6 not a turbo 4  it makes the sale without having to get to the 350

I wonder if the IS300 V6 is tuned for regular as well given the power drop.

Definitely about time they killed off the 2.5L.

I doubt packaging is the issue.  More likely Lexus wants to do one or some of the following:

1. Limit sales until they can prove out reliability of the 2.0T in the real world.
2. Force people to upgrade to the V6 models to get AWD.  More $$$ for them.

This too.  I have a friend with a RWD BMW 328i.  Does fine with a set of winters.
Too bad Lexus doesn't offer a decent manual transmission.

I think you're being a bit dramatic here.  :)

First of all, we don't know the fuel economy figures yet. And I seriously doubt that this is a way to push buyers into the more expensive 350. Lexus acknowledges that the vast majority of buyers in this segment choose AWD and for whatever reason the turbo four doesn't mate with the AWD system in the IS (at least not yet). This is still a substantial power upgrade from the current IS250 for what will surely be a modest price increase.

The AWD system in the IS sedans is different from the NX/Highlander/RX/etc system as the engine is mounted longitudinally.

The 3.5L D4S engine is fantastic regardless of how long it's been around.  It might give up a FEW ponies to some of the competition (though it's not like they're all sporting 400hp or more...) it's a super solid engine that has great power delivery and it's dual injection system gives the benefits of both types with no apparent downsides - no carbon issues, etc.

Right now, the IS350 in either RWD or AWD form is a great car to drive and own.  I know a growing number of people with this car and now that I've had a chance to drive both versions, either one would be more than welcome in my garage.  Yes, the RWD model is head and shoulders better than the AWD thanks to the transmission and tuned differently suspension/steering, the AWD model is still a great car.

Maybe less than a few HP, Jon.. On my 2006, I put down 275 RWHP.  That for a car that's rated 306 at the crank.
