I'm pretty sure I read something about Volvo having a similar system they are developing and that was at least a year ago.  Love the idea of having the car drop me off at the front of a building, find and park itself, then come and pick me up when I'm ready.

...question is, if this is widespread (not just Car2Go), can the car detect signs indicating "no parking between x hours" or the like?  Your car may show up with a ticket under the wiper blade ;)

A great idea, though.

...one day you will leave the car to find a spot and when you push the button to bring it back, a message will show up 'can't sync, please drive to the nearest dealer'. Problem is, you will have no idea where the car parked itself.

If cars start to come with Speed Racer-style saws, then yes.
