Mrs Gurgie's new ride
« on: June 04, 2015, 09:39:22 am »
So the GF has been pining for a Mini Cooper since last fall... for kicks I said she should try to to sell her 05 Mazda 3 (which she bought in October last year only) and then if it sells use that for the Mini Cooper.  The Mazda sold in 1 day!!  For a profit of $500 over what she paid  ???  So Cooper hunting we went... I narrowed it down to the 2005 & 2006 Cooper S as being the most reliable (in her price range), the R53 with the W11 engine that is supposed to be quite bullet proof.  After a couple of test drives, some negotiation, waiting for the owner to return from a business trip and complete the safety (she drove my Jeep for 2 weeks)... the new family member has arrived... 2005 Mini Cooper S, with 117k on the clock.  Car is in very good shape overall, has a couple of rust spots starting on the hatch that we'll get Mini Canada to repair under their 12yr rust coverage, but the engine is solid, a few newer parts on it and a few I will need to wrench on... like maybe a underdrive pulley  ;D

Nice color and still looks very good for being a 10 year old car.  I'm sure she'll enjoy having it, and maybe in a year she'll be begging for a MX-5 and sell this Mini for another $500 profit.  :rofl2:

Looks great!  The R53 Cooper S is such hoot! I would love one as an inexpensive, yet fun, 2nd car.

I've taken it out for a couple of little runs & it's been go kart like fun.... just not used to the torque steer of a FWD car anymore  :o  Makes for a great little city run-about though and will be fun to take on some twisty roads from time to time.  Seats are comfy enough and with enough support to do some long distance drives too.

Love the rims, as everyone else.  I personally couldn't live with the firm ride as a DD in Toronto, but it'd be a great 2nd car!

The rims look better in real life even, the pics don't do them justice.

The ride is firm, I took it to work today and our Ottawa roads aren't any better than the Toronto ones, so you can feel everything... but the fun part is darting around those potholes, manhole covers (ooops, I mean maintenance covers), snails, etc....  :rofl2:  with the razor sharp steering!!  Gotta say though, my 951 has a smoother ride even... but longer wheelbase... so it's all relative.

Congratulations man! I love the R50/R53s; I miss mine more than any other car I've ever owned.

Watch for the power steering pump starting to whine, and also, good luck getting Mini to cover tiny rust patches under the 12Y warranty. I was told it applies to perforation only...

Thanks for the heads up on the power steering pump, will keep an eye out for that & change it when required.  I took the car into Mini's approved repair facility here in Ottawa last week and they took a bunch of pics of it & the rust spots.  The guy I was dealing with claims that he hasn't had one denied yet by BMW and that they'll give her a new hatch and then repair the quarter panels around the tail lights where it's starting to bubble.  He said it's a common repair they've done... so fingers crossed here!  Car went into service originally in August of 2005, so she'll have just over 2yrs left on the rust coverage.  Previous owners did have the car rust proofed, not sure if it was Krown or someone else, but I can see the plugs where they drilled to do the spray.  The guy at the repair facility recommended to get the new hatch done as well.
