I'm a long time lurker (for years now) and decided to register just to comment to this cluster F"?k of a thread. Sorry.
First off, I've never owned a Miata but I do want one as a week-end toy / Summer car, and badly. I'm not a gear-head and I won't ever be racing on week-ends but there is just something so right about a car that seems to exist for no other reason than to be fun to drive spiritedly within (or at least not too far beyond) the legal limit. The Top Gear video review I found online pretty much did it for me as did reading about the fanatical approach Mazda has taken to shave weight. Not to mention the looks (launch edition with the black and tan interior especially).
I love my S60, and its pretty fast for a family car. But its also heavy and bad on gas and really only FUN when I accelerate to merge on the highway. When I bought it I figured I might as well get the turbo 6 because they'd eventually get killed off by ever tightening environmental regulations anyway and I'd may as well enjoy one when while I still could. There are times where I actually miss my first car, a '93 Civic Si Hatch, I think it had 125hp and you had to get close to redline (7200 IIRC) to wring everything out of the little motor but it was fun, and I only got two tickets the 9 years and 240K KM I owned it. FUN CAR!
Anyhow, the point I wanted to make is that it seems the car's harshest critics seem to bring up the same points including some or all of the following...
-A used boxster, S2000, M3 etc. would be more fun.... yes and I could have bought a used M5 when I got my new S60, so what? Apples & Oranges right.
-Mazda has underwhelmed with a sub 200hp car.... yes, but its the fastest mx-5 yet and the 200hp (or close) vehicle will surely come one day in the form of the Mazdaspeed version.
-The competition is faster, bigger, cheaper etc... no, this car, if we are being honest is in a class of one, name the other sub 2500lb convertible RWD 2 seat roadster that MSRP's loaded at just under 40K? (oh, and it has to be new)
Honestly, I applaud Mazda for having the audacity to release this thing with less hp than before. They obviously have a hit on their hands and I'm reasonably certain their target customer doesn't care that this car is slower in a straight line than a V6 Camry, 10 year old M3, whatever.
Cheers
