No...... its always been the MX-5......

It's had "Miata" stickers on it though....
The standard name worldwide is the MX-5, so let is stick with consistency and standardisation.

It was Miata in Japan.
That's like saying the Mazda3 is an Axela or the Mazda6 the Atenza.......that's just for Japan.

I like MX-5 also, but non-car people in this neck of the woods would raise their eyebrows if you used that, while Miata would be an instantly recognizable name.

The new MX-5 is barely slower than an S2000 to 60 MPH.

I guess it depends on your definition of "barely." The S2000's number is 4.9 s.  If this new Miata is anything like the NC I drove last weekend, it is a six second car at best.  That is slower than a V6 Camry.

As stated, this version is around 150lbs, 300lbs less than an FR-S.

Where have you seen 4.9? Best number I've seen is 5.5.

Road and track tested one at 4.9.  Not sure if others were able to replicate.

And the new MX-5 has broken into the 5s, as posted above.

5s is not bad, actually.

I am sure a Camry seems quick to someone who drives a Corolla.  You should try my V8-equipped S4 sometime - your view of these things will be altered forever.

Camry(with V6) seems plenty quick to me and i have 333hp.    Your S4 with 340 HP V8 is not any quicker than my car...

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

Actually a 340hp Audi would feel slow to me were I driving my previous 11.0 sec Camaro or my 9sec street bike. Probably similar to my 330hp Porsche - though my car was lighter, but turbo lag was an issue.

Don't assume that if we have a Corolla in the family that I don't know what fast feels like.

My car is in the low 5 second range, or at least it was when it was new.  The only way your Camry is going to get to 60 in less time is if you drive it off a cliff.  ;)

Altered forever by low 5 sec 0-60??  haha...  I imagine one must struggle to remain conscious at those incomprehensible speeds.

Yea...I tried one.  Then bought an IS350 with a V6...and it was faster.

And if you really want your mind altered, you should have tried my 640HP Supra.   ;)

aqua drives an E46 M3

Oh, I misinterpreted his wording. I thought that number was a little high for a Camry.

I actually looked for an M3 wagon, but I couldn't find one.  And E63 AMG wagons were out of my price range.  So I got the Avant.  I am not really aware of any other wagons with V8s worth buying - I think my S4 will be the last one of its kind.

That is actually pretty fast for a wagon.  If I really want to go fast, I go to the track with the Ducati 996.  It is probably under 3 seconds to 60, but I've never actually looked it up.

Seriously? You have an V8 S4 and you think others don't (or didn't in the past) have comparatively fast or faster cars than you (just because one of their cars is a Corolla?!), and therefore they don't know what fast is?

You're new around here, aren't you? Doesn't sound like you know the folks you're talking to... and you're just trying to show off.

You were shopping an M3 wagon? I'm not surprised you didn't find one, as there's no such thing as an M3 wagon.

It's definitely under 3 seconds to 60.
They're usually about 3.2 to 100.

Do you know what a straw man is?  He listed the cars he owns, and all of them save the Miata are practical cars not designed for performance.  Actually, it is questionable whether you could call the Miata a performance car. It is the collection of someone with a certain perspective.

Been here since 2009, but you can call me a newbie if you want.  I have a job as a vehicle engineer, that does not allow me to spend hours posting on chat boards.

I'm not sure an eight year old station wagon (!) is a good object to show off with.  But if you think it's impressive, thanks.  There are not many women around who know the difference between an A4 and an S4.

No doubt.  The figure for the CBR929 I used to have was 2.9 seconds.  It actually "felt" faster than the Ducati because of the manic 4 cylinder engine.

But getting back to the topic, I think the essence of the Miata is that it was a British sports car without Lucas electrics that would leave you stranded.  It has acceptable performance for the street.  But I think the notion some folks have, that it is a performance car, is best viewed as a victory on the part of the marketers.  There is a reason there are a dozen suppliers selling aftermarket turbo kits for it.

There is no technical reason Mazda could not have made a car more similar to the Z3 M, which had over 300 horsepower and has a legitimate claim to the performance car label.

You can buy an aftermarket turbo kit for a 5.0 Mustang, does that mean its not a performance car either?

There are lots of reason why the Miata isn't 300hp from the factory. Costs, reliability, marketing, design/purpose, etc. Not every car needs to have huge HP number to be fun to drive.

ElecMay,

you have some cool toys, a duc and S4 wagon!!

but there are some heavy duty toy holders on here with cool jobs as well, so lets be respectful!

also, your definition of performance cars is narrower mine.  I think Miata is a performance car.  it performs in corners.  it gives drivers the feeling of lightness and connectedness decidedly lacking in many higher powered but heavier cars.

would i give up my m3 for  na1 or 2 or even 3 version of miata?  probably not.  ...actually, definitely not.

but this new miata...     it is drool worthy to me.
