Hmmm. If my engine blew up I'm not sure I'd have told the dealer I had shifted from 5th to 2nd.  ;)
Did it show somewhere during diagnostics the engine went past redline?

On Porsches they do. Every. Single. Over-rev.

Even on pedestrian cars like my civic, an over-rev is logged by the ECU. I'm not talking from personal experience but have read about it on civic forums for sure. People intending a 6 - 3 downshift to pass and mistakenly do a 6 - 1 instead...  :nono:

A competent stick shift driver can usually tell half way through releasing a clutch that they're in the wrong gear.

That should pretty much send the engine flying out the hood.    :o
Should be able to tell something ain't right pretty quick & stomp the clutch back down

One of the worst sounds known to man...
I love it when a plan comes together.

On my MG it seems very easy to hit reverse instead of second. Oddly it isn't easy to get into reverse when you actually want to.

That would be a day-ruiner.

Yes, those incidents definitely ended badly.

A competent stick shift driver can usually tell half way through releasing a clutch that they're in the wrong gear.

We are talking about civic drivers here... Many (myself included) learned to drive stick in these cars.

A lot of manual cars now have a gear indicator on the dash so you can see what gear you are in prior to ignoring it and blowing your engine.

What!? Lol

Really? I haven't seen one but I haven't driven a really modern manual car besides my bare bones Mazda 2.

yeah, i haven't seen that either... would be kind of nice, not gonna lie.

i know the vipers had a few instances of a missed gear on the downshift... because it could handle the redline, it would just lose the back end and smash! pretty sure some very competent drivers had some wipeouts due to that.

If you're shifting quickly...really rowing through the gears...it happens so fast it can be tough to catch.

Fortunately the old 915 box was so :censor:, you couldn't shift fast!
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

I'm pretty sure this is not new. I somewhat remember that stuff in the 90s. For instance the indicator on a civic is the red section on your RPM....

hahaha!

and yeah, i meant the gear indicator thing, not a shift indicator... lots have a signal/dot that lights up when you get to a shift point, but i've never seen anything to tell you what actual gear you are in. you *should* be able to tell, but sometimes things are wonky... music blaring, roof down, not looking at rpms... bunch of times i don't even notice until i get to work that i was in 5th the whole time rather than 6th... might have noticed if i glanced at the speedo (or just *gasp* looked at my shifter... but still... i don't rest my hand on it or have the need to look usually).

If someone needs to have what gear they're in displayed on their dash it's time to sell the manual transmission car and buy an automatic.  ;D

I think it is really meant for track work when there is a lot of things happening at once....

Thats fine, if you are tearing down a gravel road sideways at 160km/h during a muddy stage in a Welsh rally, cool, but how does one forget what gear they are in??
Lighten up Francis.....

I haven't seen a car with a gear indicator displayed all the time, but the Focus and Elantra will tell you it's time to shift into 4th for example.

Most higher end motorcycles and about half of the beginner class motorcycles have gear indicators now. The beginner ones include the Kawasaki Z125 Pro and Versys-X 300, Yamaha R3, BMW G310R, KTM 390 Duke, and Suzuki GSX250R and GW250. None of the 500 and under Hondas have it, and the Ninja 300 is missing it too. It makes a more sense in motorcycles where you can't feel which gear you're in. In a car where you can tell by the shift knob's position which gear you're in, it's unnecessary.

i actually forget what gear i'm in half the time, when i'm droning along with traffic, but when i do, i just reach for the shift knob, instantly know which gear i'm in...  no problem really.

I can tell what gear I'm in by the speed and revs, but I only have five to pick from, and really, when moving, I'm using four of them, and at moderate speeds on backroads, I'm using three of them.

If I was driving a WRC car with gawd-knows how many gears and and engine that revs like it has an anti-gravity flywheel, and a navigator barking crap at me, I might want that indicator.  For sure a shift light!
