I find the Ford pricing and package packages to be high - to the point that they are not on my shopping list.
I get it that high end compacts can cost more than a low end mid size sedan but for 30,000 - it gets you into a very nice Accord EX-L.

I know folks may want a smaller car than the Accord - but hey it is a tough value proposition on my side.

Am I seeing 4 cylinders in that engine bay?
Really curious how the 3-cyl will perform in terms of smoothness and fuel economy.

You know what?  You are totally right.  I must have been asleep at the switch.  The dealer told me it was a 1.0-litre ecoboost.  But it's not, it's a 2.0L GDI they don't offer the 1.0L on the titanium from what I can tell.  I will fix that.  thanks for waking me up, seemed peppy.... and clearly that's 4 injectors and intake plenums.

Test drove the Focus before settling going with the Corolla.  For running around town and some highway trips, the Corolla rode nicer, and I fit better (6'3).  Power wise the Focus was definitely tops

I agree but the reality is that actual transaction prices will be much lower with the Ford.

Prices are in line with competition....and don't forget about the discounts, employee pricing is coming and these units will have their prices knocked down by 3-5k.

Ford pricing feels like Canadian Tire pricing - nothing is sold at full price. Just wait for the sale.

this is a small car, a compact car even but for some reason it seems shorter than I remember from previous times I’ve driven it.
...that's because it is (compared to its competition, which has grown...significantly in some cases:

178.5" long
104.3" wheelbase

Corolla:
182.6" long
106.3" wheelbase

Jetta:
183.3" long
104.4" wheelbase

Civic:
179.4" long
105.1" wheelbase

I would like to know what the transaction price actually is on this thing...$31k?  no chance.  $27k?  Palatable.

it would be nice if many of the auto manufacturers would provide a mid-range vehicle (the model that is the biggest seller) for your testing and reviews instead of the fully loaded models that you seem to get most of the time.  Every time you get one of them, the discussions on pricing seems to dominate the conversation and the features of the vehicle become secondary.

After 2500km with one, a basic SE sedan, my pluses were:

- steering
- power
- fuel economy
- DCT knows it's a manual
- cruise control at 90 mph? no issues (gotta love desert driving)
- trunk fully opens when popped
- trunk loads two full-size suitcases + 2 carry-ons

From a Titanium hatch, I add:

- kick-a$$ Sony stereo - fully worth the upgrade to Titanium IMHO

Minuses:

- tight rear legroom
- hatchback trunk tiny when seats are up
- msrp creeps up real fast
- no 1k$ Costco rebate on Focci

You can get the Sony stereo on the SE. It's bundled with MyFord Touch and nav.

The Focus packaging bugs me a bit. There's options available on the SE that you can't get on the Titanium, like the sharp-looking Black Pack (black wheels and other trim).

Absurdly, Ford charges $1200 for a sunroof and $1200 for leather - yet you can opt for a package that includes both for $1500. Yet dealers stock cars that have just one or the other. Weird.

Having fun with the build and price.

Selecting the Sony gets you a 3200$ bundle - you can't have it as a 1500$ stand-alone MFT bundle. With only that and the DCT, you're at 25,314$ in the SE.

Let's add heated seats to the SE. 26,014$. Want that moonroof? better take the 1500$ leather pkg, as you get leather for 300$ over the lone moonroof. 27,514$.

Now let's try Titanium:

Starts at 27,914$ with the DCT. Here, leather is std, as is the Sony/MFT pkg, so the moonroof is 1200$. Total: 29,114$.

So, yes, with careful selection you can get into the SE with the wanted features, but there are so many combos available on the SE that finding the right car on a lot must be hard. Titanium is 1600$ more, but with far less build variations, and probably more std kit.

I really like your nitpicks with the day-by-days...it really does make you see the intricate issues that exhibit themselves only 'eventually'.

I agree with you, too, that you start to really warm up to the vehicle.  As a rental in California, I really, really enjoyed it and always sought it (or a Mustang) out.

I'd be happy just with the S trim in Manual. It has Air. you don't have pay a 1-2 grand for that. it's $18,464 on the road. Colors are crap to choose from and I'd prefer the Hatch. But the basic focus it's not bad car.....Avoid the cars with a push button start. My Sister ST got stolen so easy. It may be a nice feature....Forget it IMO....

How do you know that's why it was stolen?

I'm driving a $32k Golf this week (that isn't even a diesel or a GTI...), so the price on this thing doesn't seem so out of whack.

^^ the price of most compacts is out of whack! VW certainly pushed the price a little higher...after you add in a diesel, you'd better off with something else.

I agree wholeheartedly with Tauri here, Patrick.  I like that manufacturers are making basic cars nicer, and there must obviously be a cost.  I also like the options of getting a compact loaded to the brim with tech.  But, unlike your Golf, which can be optioned with HIDs, this $31k Focus doesn't even offer them short of the ST.  If you want small, luxurious, and feature-rich, sure, $30k is 'reasonable', I suppose.  ...but then it better be :censor: loaded with the features that actually matter - unlike the self-parking or SYNC, which frustrates more than it serves.

Quote
If you are one to cruise well above the posted limit, look elsewhere because you need a lot of road to move this car past 120 km/h. Ford doesn’t make it obvious to consumers that this automatic transmission really is a dual-clutch and not a typical “slushbox” they are use to.

For the most part it doesn’t matter, but you will notice that the car tends to not creep without application of throttle, and if you are moving along bristly and brake and turn briskly as well the transmission can and will get confused and hunt for the right gear, even in sport mode.

The chassis is lively though, the trait that makes the Mazda3 so appealing to drive, a little bit of oversteer, is present here in the Focus.
I don't understand what you're saying with respect to needing a lot of road to move the car past 120km/h - are you saying it completely runs out of breath?  What does the "slushbox" have to do with it?

And what are you talking about, oversteer?!  It's a FWD car.  No chance the back end slips out before the front without handbrake input.
