Seriously....bringing up fuel consumption when talking about the GT500 is just ridiculous......why?? Of the two....I like looks of the Mustang way better but that ZL1 sounds amazing and on a track, its stupid fast.
Lighten up Francis.....

These cars are just pure menaces.  Fuel economy doesn't matter, nor does interior comfort.  Can it smoke a Prius on I-10 in Coachella?  Yes.  Good, worth its pricetag.

Will they make good used buys?  Likely not - driven hard, fast, and brakes/tires are likely to be replaced often.  But they will also likely depreciate slower than their weaker brethren, so it'd balance out.

Are they Hellcat-worthy?  Not quite.  Will someone cross-shop these with the P85D?  Lolz, no.  Do they meet their intended purpose of a halo car?  Hellz yeah.

Good stuff, Pritch!

Actually both make great used buys as they are an amazing platform to build on, that LSA in the ZL1 will take a lot of power. Also, I would much rather maintain/repair something coming out of the USA than something with an RS/M/AMG badge.

and lets be honest... so many of these beasts aren't used as they were intended... so many are garage queens for well established retirees who miss the muscle cars of their youth...

not that there is anything wrong with that... but i think to assume they have all been ridden hard and put away wet might be a little off from the reality.

great cars. and yeah, hellcat and all that... but these are great machines that are not only 1/4 mile cars, but daily drivers and relatively comfortable and livable...

not too shabby a time we are driving in.

Theres that too....the vast amount of GT500s, ZL1s and Z28s are owned by people well into the Metamucil/Viagra ages so yeah, most have never seen redline  ;D

" 662 horsepower and 0-100 km/h in under four seconds, and the (at the time) most powerful V8 engine on the road under your hood" - most powerful? WRONG!!!! The aptly named Hellcat has a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 good for 707 hp and 650 lb-ft, with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The automatic is faster, hitting 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, while the manual is more fun and still quick doing 0–60 in 3.9 seconds.

These cars are awesome and all.    But in the Mustang/Camaro class I think it'd be more fun to source a standard V8 model and mod to one's personal taste.   Probably save some coin depending on how far you want to go.

If I'm spending $60k (new) MSRP on American factory iron, it's Corvette or bust for me.

You apparently didn't even read the quote you sourced.

Nice. I like these sorts of roundups, especially when we bring the used market into it. Its so much more varied with possibility and brings cars that when new might have been too far out of budget into the realm of reasonable. You've got to admit that Detroit makes some seriously fast iron and especially for the money.

I must ask though, why no Challenger?

You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

I really like the Shelby Mustang. A friend has one, but he wouldn't let me drive it, ... something about RX-8 owners don't know what to with actual torque in an engine ...

Lol.  Plus really, the Challenger is a porker compared to these.  On a road course, I'm sure either of these would smoke the Challenger.

That said, I remember reading somewhere that the GT500 was a bit too much in terms of power for the road course, making it feel twitchy.   The Boss 302 Laguna Seca was much better suited for the road course.

Well okay, but real world vast majority of owners are not taking these machines anywhere near the limit. They're being bought for power, V8 rumble, nostalgia, and to have the musclest muscle car.

I do accept the Pritch hates Mopar theory however. :)

I love mopar!  The challenger just didn't quite have the sauce to make the power level I wanted for this story.  Had there been a hellcat out a few years already,  I'd have added it in..
