There was a bit of funny business with the 5.0L ratings. A year after this one, they changed the rating from 225hp and 300ft-lbs to 215 and 285 ft-lbs. I forget what the excuse was, but Ford said that no changes were made to the engine, but the new numbers were more accurate.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Car & Driver 2019 Jetta GLI
We measured a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.6 seconds with our dual-clutch automatic test car, matching the best figure we've recorded for a GTI, and a still-solid 5.8 seconds with the manual.

Mustang 5.0's of the late 80's early 90's were in the low 6 second range.  So on paper, the Jetta is faster.  Probably more comfortable.  Probably better on gas.  Probably faster around a race track in stock form.  Probably still an FGC though right?  But...I'll still take that silver one just for the noises.

The GTs were overrated cars in many ways. The best Mustang of the era was the LX 5.0 notchback and only to use it as a starting platform.

Friday nights at the strip  brought out hordes of GT owners and they all went home sad when they ran high 15s unless they were willing to absolutely thrash the living hell out of it.  The same was true of course for the Camaro of the time, but it didn't have the Mustangs hype or reputation.

Yeah, I remember that.

So realistically the GTI/GLI is likely on par with the 5.0 for torque.

I just like 'em for the sound they make.  They have a sort of metallic rasp that isn't replicated on any other car.

Yup, and the 5L LX coupe was always a simple, good looking car. Never a GT Fan because of all the plastic bits.

Winnipegger, Ed Honenberg factory-ordered this 1987 LX 5.0 to race in NHRA Stock Eliminator with the radio-delete and vinyl interior options.  He had it running high 11-second time slips.

Dad in law has the exact car. His is a 90 notch with hardly any options, 5.0, 5 speed, and power locks/cruise, was dark grey on grey. A few years back it got into a very minor fender bender. Instead of fixing to original he went full retard and painted it black, gutted the interior, put a 351 with all kinds of go fast goodies, set of slicks, all ready for the 1/4 mile track that closed down two years later. It sits rotting away......

1977 Dodge Aspen, 2 door, 79,000 kms, $10,900

It's in very good condition, in and out, but these aren't $10k cars.

No 5 lug but I believe he did the subframe connectors and driveshaft loops to run at the track. It sits rotting away next to his Grand National and GMC Syclone truck (which we were partners on years back till the motor exploded) It was a nice car, I much prefered it as a stock notchback rather than a useless 1/4 mile car. Still streetable I guess with a set of tires.

Would be way more interesting if it was a V6. I wonder what the story behind this car is.

That little 1.8 V6 was such a cool little engine. I wished Mazda had spliced two together to make a sweet little 3.6L V12 for their 929, or into a RX-7 based car.
