That is just an incredible find....There are so few unrestored examples left, I'd just get it drivable and then clean/polish it as is. No paint or resto work.

The 3.8L V-8 is weak.  The 300SD diesel is more desirable if you want a short wheelbase (SD or SE) and if you want the big V-8 you have to get the long wheelbase.

That said, while it's slow and shockingly thirsty for a smaller engine, the W126 is a nice car no matter what engine you find if you find a great example.  Personally, I would search only for late 560SEL.  They're the best of the best W126.

Bidding now at $810,000. Just to put these gems in perspective, there was an earlier auction this year for an oem 300SL trunk tool kit. It went for ... $20,500  :o

A friend of the family was test driving a brand new Vega way back when and the engine popped a frost plug, pumped the coolant out and overheated.  On the test drive!

One of the biggest POS cars ever made.
