Lots of choice within 500kms of Ottawa for a winter car. But thanks.

This is fun, not sure what your max budget is, but here's a few more  ;D

this is fun indeed!

budget would be about $6k max

I hate Acura seats, never can get comfortable in them, and the styling is meh for me. Plus, it is underpowered with a buzzy 4cyl. Other than an S2000, I am not a fan of Honda 4cyls at all. Needs a turbo or V6.
I do like that Lexus. That would be the sensible choice, although RWD in a winter car I am worried about (yes I know Firm etc. winter RWD muscle cars...I never have).
Both those Caddys have not aged well at all, and also are RWD. I do like GM reliability though, simple tech that is cheap to fix. Still, not sure if I could get past the styling...

But still, I am trying to keep an open mind here...despite my very eccentric taste.

I agree that those CTSs did not age well. Better off finding an STS or even a DTS (assuming size isn't an issue) for the same or less $.

I have a 2004 TSX and while you can rev it to the moon the big four is pretty torquey down low as well. Its not buzzy at all despite the 7300rpm redline. It is a seriously nice motor with the 6spd manual. Although it does rev higher on the highway you can't tell except for reading the tach. Can't comment on the seats as they are different for everyone.

yes it does have a high redline, but my test drive of one soured me from them forever. It also was a 2004 with a manual, and I found it gutless after driving a MS6 and a couple of turbo Saabs. I just kept thinking it was too small/underpowered a motor for the size and class of vehicle, and needed to be thrashed to get it to go anywhere. Would much prefer a manual Accord with the V6, for example. Although Honda seats I can never get comfy in, same with Subaru as well for some reason.

Don't get me wrong, i love a manual and NA motor that revs out (read: my Alfa) but in the Acura it just was not a rewarding experience. Sorry, but those were my impressions. I really wanted to like it because they are reliable and cheap to run.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

I ran a RWD Mazda Pickup for a few winters, including one in the interior.  With good tires it's non-issue.

Yeah, Bella spent last winter in her RWD 323i with a set of used X-ice 3's and didn't have an issue. I also threw in a 50lb bag of sand in the trunk to help out a bit more, made a difference for sure.

would consider that then, gotta experience it at least once I figure

I have driven trucks and Camaros in the winter when I worked at GM, and it was scary as hell...but they were not on winter tires.

You need to buy the most reliable car possible...FWD or RWD, manual or automatic if you think you'll be going through a divorce. Eccentric tastes be damned.

Corolla, then?

If I were thinking of a divorce/separation, the last thing I'd be thinking of would be adding more debt/liabilities.  It's all about getting back on your feet as quickly as possible, right?

With my sensible pants on.

I still like the 2006+ Saab 9-5s though, by 06 all the issues of the early models were gone, they used a lot of GM parts, and my fav indy mech. knows exactly how to keep them on the road for 300,000+kms for cheap. Plus, nobody wants the orphan brand so you get a lot of car for little.

We shall see if the wife wants to take the car. If not, I will drive it until it dies.

Good deal, low mileage for that year. Lots of manuals around too, if you wish to go FWD. Just avoid 2003-2004.
