Late to the game, but that little 2002 is just stunning.

Local car...   http://www.autotrader.ca/a/porsche/911/ottawa/ontario/19_10751589_/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&orup=12_15_42&pc=L6W%204C4&sprx=-1

Wow, so much care and attention.  Stupid secondary air injection system, ugh.  There's no cheap fix, unfortunately.  I haven't heard of many bottom ends being affected unless you ignored the CEL for a long time.  Top end rebuilds come with regularity thanks to it.

Complete head redesign for the 996 liquid cooling solved it, and the 996 would have been damned near perfect had they not screwed the pooch with the IMS.

As much as I love the 993, and love love love air cooled 911s, my sixty grand would seek out a 996 Turbo.  Literally one of the best cars Porsche ever made in terms of over-engineering build quality.

Just buy a 99 and you have no worries.

Also...there's a high mileage 996 TT X50 in Ontario for $30k....I'm tempted...

Wow, that is tempting.  X50 was a great package.  220K isn't that bad.  I think the low price is also due to the AT, but I know you actually prefer it.  The old converter style trans in these cars is brutally strong, I get it, but I'd still want a three pedal car.

Too bad the current owner is a vampire and seems to only come out at night...

The bonus (for me) is the ability to swap out the converter. I'd be modding it slightly...so I'd run into the same problem with the Supra: the power is so explosive as quick you can't keep up with the shifts.

But I get someone preferring the manual.

Even in stock form, those cars are hard to keep up the shifts at wide open throttle.  They're beasts with a lot of untapped potential.  They can be modded to 700hp with decent reliability.  Want to see something hilarious?  Watch someone get out of a 930 into a 996.  They're used to immense turbo lag, ridiculous tall gearing and 300hp.  Suddenly there's no lag, an extra 150hp, AWD traction and an engine that revs so much faster it's insane.  It's a German GT-R, essentially.
