“type of vehicle North Americans don’t understand.” In fact, as we write this, we can’t remember the last time we saw an Orlando or second-generation Rondo (introduced in 2013) on the road.
I see them in about 1:5 ratio around here. Whatever is the excuse, driving in style matters to consumers, hence the announcement.

I think the passenger version of the Transit Connect is a wonderful vehicle over this and the Mazda 5.  Saw a ton of them in the Phoenix area this past week, albeit most were rentals.  That said, saw a ton of new Ford Transits (the full size van) while down there too, in cargo and passenger configurations.

I saw this one in Phoenix being used as a customer shuttle.  Good looking vehicle.

To many, it looks like a mini cargo van and not for passengers.  I don't think it'll sell well on its own accord - only as far as fleet sales or in its capacity as a cargo van.

...but it costs money to redesign a vehicle, and without the 'promise' of profit, even a vehicle based on another (parts-sharing) will still cost something.  Without updating it, it'll feel dated and fail to sell well.

I made that comment about the Z4 and the guy at the gym who got a 428i instead, hates it, and wants his Z4 back, but now that he's had a HUD and some of the other features, he can't go back to the new Z4 until it's updated (unlikely, given the 'rumours').

Double-edged sword.

I honestly think the number of these I've seen driving around here I can count on one hand.

These look like a great little van. I've yet to see a passenger version around here though.

Are you talking about the Orlando or Transit Connect? AFAIK the Orlando only comes in a passenger version.

Orlando sightings are pretty rare, indeed, and this rig was wrong-priced from launch. They only showed loaded LTZ versions at auto shows, priced over 30k$. The MPV segment is dying anyway in Canada. After the fair success of the first generations of Rondo and Mazda5, the second gens seem riveted to the showroom floor as customers move to compact SUVs. Heck, Mazda has a 4k$ incentive on the Mazda5 to try to move them. I see a lot of young families with the Dodge GC CVP - can't beat the value at less than 20k$, and people seem to be catching on that it doesn't make sense to pay a higher price to spare a few loonies on fuel.

That's one less re-badged Daewoo on the market.

But the Ford Transit Connect passenger version starts from $29k topping out at $36k. At those prices, there is just no reason to choose one over the true minivans.

The Orlando, I wanted to like it. It was the only 7 passenger vehicle in Canada with a manual transmission, But I didn't like it.

I see a handful of these a month. But nothing like the handfuls of Rondos and 5s I see a day, although these two have been on the market for a bit longer.
