"a humpy little economical runabout built for an entirely heterogeneous population. Conformity, obedience, docility – a slavish worship of military strength and a suppression of the individual."

I suspect that it was built for a homogenous population   as most European countries were in those early modern days.

Yes, I have indeed got that wrong way 'round. Fixed.

Nice nostalgic article.

Uncle had an Orange Beetle and a VW Kombi van when I was a kid. I have an affinity for the sound of the classic air cooled engine.

Wanted to own one but they were long in the tooth by the time I was able to pick one up as a toy.

The final original Type 1 VW Beetle rolled off the production line at Puebla, Mexico, on 30 July 2003.

The 1977 was the last model year the Standard Beetle Sedan was offered and sold in the United States (1975 was the last model year the Super Beetle Sedan).
Production continued on the Super Beetle-based Convertible/Cabriolet which was offered and sold through the 1979 model year in the United States.

Really neat car. People can be so cool sometimes.

While being serenaded by a mariachi band. I have pictures somewhere.
