How is the centre stack in person?  It looks like a really, really cheap effort from photos:

Definitely doesn't scream $50,000 to me, though the mechanicals 'might'.

That's actually always been my criticism of Ford/Lincolns - the centre stack just doesn't look right...flat/blank areas, overwrought with plastic, sometimes shiny, sometimes matte, but never to the quality of its competition.  E.g. Murano:

Great article, Jeff, lovely photos, and again, much thanks for all the work you do (including Descending!!)

NO doubt the dash in the Murano looks much better and I prefer that. But I wonder how much of that can be fixed by applying a little bit of photoshop to the top pic (it clearly lacks in contrast and brightness compared to the Murano shot). So maybe it's really not that bad.

I agree with you on Ford center stacks which have always been a bit off (also the instrument clusters too), but this interior design overall is nice in my eyes. This is a nice refresh. As for it being worth the money...yes, well its not really $50k and its much larger than the compact class.

I actually (shamefully) like the Edge a lot. I've rented the previous gen a few times and though it was surprisingly good...comfortable, perfect size, good features, etc. This one sounds even better. If I was to give in to the sweatpants segment of the automotive world, I would consider an Edge.

I also have always liked the Edge...no shame required IMHO.

Freignt and Tax included, at $49k buys you a 2.0T AWD Titanium model with every option. I'd argue thats quite solid value.

Says the guy who is driving a direct competitor to the Edge!  ;)

2015 Edge does look like quite a step up compared to the older version.  I'm thinking the new Murano appears to be a better value, but its looks are really polarizing.  And Ford could always crank up the incentives...

Anyone else bothered by the look of off-center air intake in the lower grill?

Me thinks there will be deals so I wouldn't dismiss the car (if you like it) based on MSRP.
...but how does it compare to a WRX?   :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

At that price, I'd pony up the extra $5k to get the 2.7T.

I'm surprised what a good value the Murano is in comparison. An SV AWD is $37,500 with heated cloth seats, pano sunroof, dual auto climate, remote start, nav, rear camera, etc, etc, etc (even the base S has nav).

Yeah, That would drive me nuts. Why not make it symmetrical like the rest of the front.

I like that off centre grille but it would be better if it was more off centre...it would look as if they meant it!

You learn that on day one of design school. If you're going to put something off-centre or asymmetrical, make it obviously so.

2015 Ford Edge Fuel Economy
Trim   Engine   Transmission   City L/100km   Hwy L/100km
Edge FWD   2.0L – I4 GTDI   6-Speed SST   11.5   7.8
Edge FWD   3.5L – V6   6-Speed SST   13.2   9
Edge AWD   2.0L – I4 GTDI   6-Speed SST   11.8   8.4
Edge Sport AWD   2.7L – V6 GTDI   6-Speed SST   13.6   9.8
Edge AWD   3.5L – V6   6-Speed SST   13.7   9.6
This suggests that you can't get the 3.5L with AWD...that can't be true...can it?!?!?!?

Please look at it again with your glasses on.  It's the last line.
Funny you should mention that...I only have glasses for reading, and I stopped using them a few months ago.  I should likely reconsider that move.

Sorry!

As for reliability of the 2.0/7T vs the 3.5L V6, they both seem to be holding out relatively well.  The only one that scares me is the 1.6T in the Escape.

I have to ask, why does the 1.6T in the Escape scare you ?

Car and Driver had this to say about the 2 liter Turbo vs the 3.5 V6:

At the other end of the spectrum, acceleration from the four-cylinder remains adequate but unimpressive. While it does boast a 3-mpg improvement in EPA combined fuel economy compared with either of the V-6 engines, our experience shows that turbocharged, small-displacement engines often fall short of those estimates in the real world. The 3.5-liter V-6 offers better throttle response and a more linear power delivery, and so it seems like $425 well spent, especially compared with the much higher cost of the Sport.

If the above is true, I'd definitely opt for the V6 considering its also likely to be more reliable long term.

I sat in both of these at the Calgary Auto Show on the weekend and the Murano's interior blew me away. When I got out and saw the 45K sticker, my reaction was "Wow, great interior for the price". I could not say the same of any interior I saw in the Ford stable. This despite the following comment from the recently reprinted article here on the Murano.

"However, one of few disappointments in the interior is the plastic trim, which is visually appealing, but lacks the upscale touch that authentic wood or aluminum accents would bring – something that this Murano should deliver as Nissan’s “halo” SUV/CUV."

To me this brings out the difference between what we feel should work (or be required in a certain segment)
and what actually works which I believe the Murano offers in spades. It was simply stunning the way it was.

We are currently in the market and have been waiting for reviews of the new Edge.  All of the reviews seem to be quite positive so I went to the Ford site a priced a loaded Edge Sport.  $55,939, including freight, 20" wheels and everything else but the back-seat DVD system.  This, unfortunately, is not a price I consider "reasonable", especially when a fully loaded Murano is $10,000 less.  I don't think the Murano has all the cool tech (adaptive cruise, active lane assist, self-parking) but $10,000 seems a bit steep.  And to top it all off, the Sport does not have a heated steering wheel.  Anybody on this forum from Ford care to explain that?  The Titanium trim has it but not the Sport - seriously?

But you get a better/more powerful engine with the Sport and I think the Edge is overall bigger than the Murano. I think the 3.5 and 2.0L are more comparable to the Murano.
