I always saw the Tiguan as a terrible choice. All the electrical gremlins and other reliability issues VW is known for, wrapped in styling just as dull and unappealing as a CR-V or Rav4.

I was helping a friend buying used Tiguan 3 years ago, the asking price is high on those car.  Offer them $27000 for a 10 Highline and can not make a deal.  He end up getting a 10 M.Benz GLK for the same money.

We were debating between the Scoobie and the Tiggy.  Happy with our choice - no leaks from sunroofs, and both suck premium gas faster than Northernridge comes up with hilarious comments.  Man, I can't stop laughing.  Thanks, bud!

It's a good car, but vastly overpriced for what it was.

My parent like theirs quite a lot. My father test drove the usual suspects (Subaru, Mazda, CR-V) and preferred the Tiguan even if it came with fewer gadgets than the others, citing mainly the great engine and solid feel and handling. For them it was 30 k$ USD out the door, 3% tax inclusive.

I like it quite a lot too, with the big exception of the slushy/slack automatic gearbox sold in North America (rest of the world gets a 7-DSG).

Plus, it can't be all that bad; they're floating all over the place in Québec.

VW seems to do better in Quebec. Many reasons.  They like diesels, hatches, smaller cars more than the other provinces.  Suspect this is due to more European born residents.  And loyalty to European car manufactures.

Reputation takes years to build, and seconds to destroy.  I don't feel bad harping on the past until there is sufficient support (at least 6 years' worth of data) for better build quality without expensive repairs.

Maybe the perception, but will it change the REAL incidence of unreliability?

Were VWs past (possibly current?) reliability woes due to poor manufacturing practices, or poor engineering before the vehicles were ever assembled?  Or was/is it a supplier problem, with use of poor quality or fragile components?

I'm asking as a legit question, the popular belief is that VWs (and FGC in general!) are less reliable.  But why is that?  Because they are poorly engineered, or overly complicated?  Or poorly put together?

I assume this comment is referring to the timing chain issue on the S4.

So you wouldn't buy an A4 because of that generation of S4.

I think it's a combination of overly complicated and over engineering.
In high school I drove a 1992 VW Jetta and my dad was a DIY guy...
I've never heard him curse so much when working on that Jetta.

A perfect example to me is the new Golf commercial which shows the rear view camera pop up from the VW emblem.   Pretty cool, but I doubt that'll work well in the winter, and how long before it breaks.
