How should Noto and his Turd of a friend get to Tremblant this weekend?

Porter flights (directly to Mont Tremblant) ($449pp)
2 (15.4%)
Via Rail ($190pp, but only goes to Mtl, thereafter we'd rent a car with winter tires for $29 for the weekend and return by train)
0 (0%)
Rent a car in the GTA ($87 all-in for the weekend, but 'new' all-season tires, according to the sack at the local rental car counter...)
4 (30.8%)
Don't bother going - too expensive, Tremblant is sh!t, and your friend is equally made of fecal matter

I made my daughter the same promise Dad made me:"When you're 18, you're out of the house!"  ;D
Who says I'm >18 ;)?

I guess when you leave home really depends on cultural background.

I know some who left as quickly as they could, and then there's NoTo  :P  (... and me)

Yes, in some cultures, it is very common for kids to live at home (if possible) until they're married.

I'm 25, turning 26, and a bunch of my friends in the GTA live at home...because it costs so god damn much to rent/buy. That money saved goes towards a downpayment on a house or condo.

The way I see it, as long as the parents want you there, and it's not affecting other aspects of your life, AND you're a help rather than a nuisance (doing chores, reducing their workload, etc), why leave? Very different to be in student, or a working professional living at home vis a vis someone who doesn't do something to further their lives. (note the definition of something is flexible)

In GTA it definitely seems like a good idea to save for a down-payment while living at home. If I end up there, I'll likely stay with my dad for that reason, provided the commute isn't crazy.

To me, has nothing to do with culture - and I do plan on moving out prior to marriage.  I'm waiting for my girlfriend to finally move back to Canada...we haven't lived in the same city for almost 5 years now...it'd be nice to do so prior to taking the proverbial plunge.

Plus, with the amount I'm saving, I'll likely be able to put 40% down on my intended house AND still be able to take Jacob out for a night that Teddy won't be able to watch.  He's an expensive date, that Jacob.  ;)

Then I have no sympathy for the big ring situation.  Suck it up, buttercup.   ;)

I can afford that, too.  I expect no sympathy for the Tremblant situation ;)

For me, moving out of my parents was never about saving money or wasting money on my own place.  It was about self-respect and pride knowing that I had a job and could support myself.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

As I find there's something enjoyable about braving mildly hazardous conditions I'm inclined to go with the driving route. It is a long ass way to drive to Tremblant though.

But if your friend is not the kind who is a good road trip partner then maybe we just forget it and fly...

...we tease mmret as well about his problems with rattles in his cars that no else would notice...yet more 1st world problems   ;D

The Volvo has been pristine so far ;)

You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

he's a good road tripping buddy so long as it's not in his car.

I think we're going to go with the rental car option and brave it.

rrocket, I lived alone for 9 years fully supporting myself through multiple universities...I've proven myself enough and living with the folks now is entirely about giving back to them for all they have given me. I shovel the snow, not them.  I clean the house, minimally them.  I do their dishes.  etc.  They're fully able to care for themselves, but it's about time that I give back to them beyond mere financials and I'm proud to say I'm doing it :)

Well it is his car but I feel like he cares a bit too much about it. We're talking about an IS250 for chrissakes, this is not a Singer 911.

Then again - it is a long and potentially hazardous journey. With Ontario insurance the way it is I would be a bit cautious too.

Credit Card covers rental insurance :), so long as I don't injure anyone, my insurance rates don't budge.  Got it :)

401 between Port Hope and Cornwall is terrible in winter. Snow squalls from Lake Ontario come out of nowhere.

What happens if it's puking snow on Sunday evening and roads are bad? Take Monday off and enjoy an extra day of pow, or white knuckle it home on Sunday evening no matter what?

$hitty all-seasons on $hitty rental cars suck. No way I'd want to be stuck with that drive in bad conditions without the proper equipment.  :shake:

I must say...leave it to a lawyer to try and convince others (and himself) that he is moving back in with his parents to "give back" to them.   :rofl2:  :rofl2:

I must remind myself to NEVER allow you to do me any favors... :rofl2:

+1

I've driven that route many times and I would never want to do it in car that is not properly equipped to handle bad weather. Just way too many places on that drive that can cause you headaches.

If you think the 6.5 hour drive is long under optimal conditions, just think how long 10-12 hours will feel with it snowing and driving on sh!t a/s tires in a rental car.

Save your money, forget skiing in Quebec, and head west to the epic deep powder that is the record season that's happening at Hudson Bay Mountain Resort near Smithers BC.  They have an airport.

http://www.hudsonbaymountain.com/homepage

Or go farther north to Shames Mountain near Terrace, BC.  Epic powder, nearly no one there, and if you get your game on for the backcountry, some of the best untracked powder on the planet.

http://mymountaincoop.ca/index.php/snow-report

If you really want special skiing experiences, forget high volume resorts where you stand in line more than you're skiing and pay stupid prices for tickets and lunch.  Drop some granola bars in your pockets, ride some creaky old chair, and access the real goods.  If I wasn't hunting earned-turns in places where few people ever venture (I'm exploring new terrain in Jasper this year, best snow in the Rockies) and had money for travel, those two places would be where I'd go to ski.

Look at Tremblant's web site.  They have more pictures of Yuppies sipping wine and of the casino than they do of skiing.
