The thing about these smaller pickup trucks is that for the same price you can get a full size.  The only real benefit I see with buying a smaller truck is parking.  Fuel economy isn't really an issue as full size trucks seem to get around the same fuel economy.  I know that when looking at feature to feature the full size GMC Sierra is going to be more money but for $36K you can get a fairly well equiped Sierra.

I do have to say though that this Canyon is a good looking truck and I'm sure it will do well in the market.  There's going to be some SUV people buying these but I don't see many full size truck owners switching to the smaller offerings, sure some will but I don't see it being a significant number.  Hopefully this and the Chevy version lights a fire under Toyota and Nissan to offer something a bit better.

It does have a higher payload then a full size Ram  :rofl2:
For a farm truck , it may work as a second going to town vehicle , if you get the diesel in it

What will make or break this model is the Diesel engine , if the mileage is good it will take off

Local dealer has a red one with the all terrain package. It's a great looking truck.

Full size pickups have gotten so large that these new smaller pickups are essentially the same size if not bigger than my dads GM 1500 p.u. that I drove in the 80's.
I agree, not much different in price compared to a full size pickup. Advantages may be fewer.

For the amount of times I need a pick-up I find it easier to just rent one or now that we have a hitch just use a trailer.

I'm also looking forward to the diesel setup, but I have a strange feeling GM will drop the ball and price it through the roof. :-\

Maybe not a great value compared to the full sizer, but seems "right sized" for the average urban user.

I could park one of these comfortably in my garage and still have a vehicle with plenty of room for the family and hauling whatever I please.

Hard to imagine I'd ever buy a truck, but there's sometimes a slight desire to have one (always in the spring: yardwork, home projects, etc.).   I think I'd choose this one if I ever did.

I am most definitely interested in taking one for a spin, my local dealer has 0 of them in stock though.

Asides from that, it looks like a good package...does it have intelligent key?

And I think cost is not an issue, after pricing out a Ford F150 with all the goodies I wanted and getting close to $60k, it was refreshing to build a fully loaded version of the Canyon and get it below $40k - that's a huge price difference! Perhaps Ford overpriced their truck? I was comparing it with a Toyota Tundra and the Limited package rings it at $46k with everything I'd want, and with the Toyota you can barely top it at $60k!

Ford has a ton of features not available in other trucks though - panoramic sunroof, active cruise control, self parking, etc.

While it would be nice if the price were just a little lower, I don't think they are that crazy. It is somewhat similar to the other conversations that are had, such as fully loaded Mazda3 vs "well equipped" Mazda6.

For me, the Colorado Crew Cab 4x4 WT with convenience, appearance, and trailering packages seems like the best buy at $34k.

I have owned two new F-150 Lariat short box crewcabs since 2008. They are superb trucks but are just too long and tall. I previously had a Ford Sportrac which was perfect in every way. Alas, Ford discontinued it so I bought the F-150s. Now that the new Canyon/Colorado are available I will be looking them over closely to replace my F-150 this June. They appear to be satisfactorly sized and priced . My only complaint about them is the non-availability of a sun roof. Why, it is not offered is beyond me.

I didn't even had those features selected...Ford forces you into the Lariat if you want a nicer interior and smart key, then you need to have the Ecoboost V6 if you want the 20in wheels! A bunch of unnecessary add ons....

For whatever reason I am finding myself yearning for this truck with the diesel.

Canyon for the DD/cottage/yardwork/whatever and a Vette for the weekends?

Oh baby!

hey, that's only 100k.  you can swing that, right?   ;D

Yeah, that's a strange omission for sure.

By summer time that 60K F150 will be in the mid 40s.  They have huge incentives on them every summer (employee price + delivery allowances)

Still better than spending 100k on a 911 I'd say.    Best of both worlds.

Though you'll need a bigger garage....

I really like the Canyon and look forward to a test drive...might be a good replacement for the Ridgeline and cottage duty...on the other hand the next Ridgeline might be an even better choice. The Tacoma is not for us...too harsh and the ergonomics don't work for me. The Sierra (my 4th one) is fine but too much of a penalty for daily driving.

Re pricing: I don't think it's too bad (have to learn selling price/MSRP still). Our 2009 Ridegline MSRP was 47 and we paid 40 plus tax so a little more than this tester.

great review Jeff,
I see you've been in my neck of the woods.

Pricing...   really?
I don't know.  Anyone who's really compared APPLES TO APPLES in features will discover that the mid-size like the Tacoma doesn't not end up as the same price as the Tundra or D3s
You have to go without some options on the 1/2 ton or need massive incentives.  When I priced a couple out (online)... the incentives got the price close but not the same.

Fuel.. ok, so far, they're pretty similar.

I still don't get why people say, it's almost the same price, same fuel, I'll just buy a 1/2 ton.
I don't want the size.  Even if they're the same price and same fuel... I just don't want the size (need or desire).    If what I needed was a mid sized SUV but the dealer offered me the full sized 7-seater at the same price, I wouldn't be getting the bigger SUV just because it's the same price...
