My $85K for a Porsche would be for a 911TT - nothing else.  It's 10x the car the Cayman is.  In fact I'd rather have any year 911 turbo than any model new Cayman.  They're all among the most desirable cars in the world - from the old air cooled single turbos to the first AWD 993s and the latest super-car versions.  I could spend half of the new Cayman and "live with" a 996 TT - the least desirable turbo and still a ridiculously fast and over-engineered car.

How far back would you have to go for a decent copy at that price?

Not far.  You can get 997s in that price range IIRC.

how are they compared to the Viper?

New viper?  Not sure.  Never drove it.  My viper?  They all have that crowd gathering rockstar status to them.  But the viper is like a rocket launcher compared to a snipers rifle.  Plus you have you to be in the right mood to drive it.  Not a car you want to do your running around in all day.  Either Porsche in this story you could.  Plus,  you won't get wet in the rain.

Just an awesome write-up, Justin. 8)

My own new Porsche money would go to a base 911, for the same reason as Northernridge, plus I just find the 911 shape so much prettier than the 981.

As noted you can get a superb 997 911TT for that kind of dough.  The problem with turbos is that age means little in terms of pricing.  I know an owner of a 1979 model that recently sold it for over $60K, while an early 2000's 996 can be had for as little as $40K and that's for a pretty nice example.  In every way the 996 is a better car - faster, more comfortable, easier to drive, but that makes little difference in want Porsche buyers want.  A pristine 993 911 Turbo can fetch ridiculous money!!

If memory serves, the Sport Exhaust was something over $5K just for the part - but sounds fantastic.  Typical Porsche outrageous option pricing...  (great aftermarket units are 1/2 that or less...)

That 2009 is amazing.  It's the last year of the 997 and a manual trans car.  Even with DIY shifting it can get to 100km/h in under 4 sec.

Like the drop-top of the Boxster?  Well, they're not common, but they're out there:  997 Turbo Cabs.  I love open cars, but I'd still go coupe as I'd want to spend as much time at the track as possible.

The TT is insane in the brain.  I'd rather the Cayman for everyday hooning, it's gorgeous.  Leave the track for a real car.

I'm with Snowballs on this one.  A CPO 911 Turbo with enough chedda left over to buy/ build a dedicated track car separately versus the cost the GT3.  Maybe go the best of both worlds and have one of each?  CPO 911 TT, plus a CPO Cayman R that you can tweak into a track car.  http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-2012-Porsche-Cayman-R-t41898#listing=104380269

Wonder how this compares to Magnetorheological damper aka: magnirider or magnetic ride.

Both great cars. Money being the deciding factor here, with not lose either way.
