A Skyactiv 3.7L V6  that can do less than 10L/100km in the city and low 6s on the highway (almost 40mpg) on the 5-cycle would be sweet.

Like the diesel but wonder if it would not be better suited for their SUV's.

Who cares about needing DEF? It has become pretty much the standard for most diesel models now hasn't it? Actually, are there any models that still don't need it?

Jetta and Golf don't require it.

 :-[

For some reason I thought they needed it as well. Just the Passat and Touareg...

Still, I don't think this would be a deal breaker - as long as it performs well.

Jetta and Golf don't require it.

The new Golf TDI has a DEF tank.  The upcoming Jetta revision will as well.

Do you guys still believe in a diesel Mazda 6 in NA with the price of gas now so low in the US, and bound to stay for years I might add?

I'm not holding my breadth.

Many U.S. states have higher Diesel taxes compared to unleaded fuel. No justification for it considering low sulfur diesel is supposedly still cheaper to refine compared to regular unleaded.

Think the engineers check the price of gas in the US from month to month, and say well since its cheap right now, we will work on a V8 instead?  If so, what would be the point in releasing a statement that they are still working on it.  If they had no plans to continue with it, they would just keep their mouths shut, and hope we forgot about it.

Yeah, any time soon would be a horrible time to introduce it.  Diesel costs around $0.35 more right now, and you get to pay a 2 or 3000k premium, for marginal gains in fuel economy (or at all if you drive any city).  All with expensive exhaust after treatment (not talking about cheap DEF, but an expensive filter).  Don't get me wrong, I love the driving characteristics... but it's getting harder and harder to justify for any other reason.

I find it interesting that they don't over a 6 with more power. I mean, not that I'd buy one anyway, but if I were in the market, the lack of more powerful version would have me looking elsewhere.

Diesel is always a nice option to have, however.
I actually disagree.  I've never been left wanting for more power in the Mazda6 or CX-5 with the 2.5L.  Fuel economy is already great.

The diesel option would be good because it's unique - resale value would be better, the ability to tow, or if you live in a hilly area or often take to the highways.  There is a reason for the diesels, but I think eliminating the need for the DEF would definitely be a bonus (or a requirement) for sales.

What are you talking about??  Diesel is 1.19/l while regular gas is 1.12 today.

Maybe prices are different in other areas of the country?  Just an idea..

Average of 119.9 for gas and 139.9 for diesel in Metro Vancouver.

I'll use lowest prices for Edmonton because shock value... 87.4 for gas  :o and 119.9 for diesel.

I agree, the 2.5L especially with manual is quite fast.  I find myself speeding without even realizing it.  But there a few who feel a midsize sedan needs over 200hp...  If they had a V6 they had developed long ago fine, then offer it.  But makes little sense to start from scratch an offer a turbo/V6 for the select few that would choose it.  How man V6 Accords?  Very few...

$1.02 for regular and $1.30 for diesel in Regina right now. A few places have a bit narrower spread, some places have a bigger spread.

Quite fast as opposed to what?

0-60 in 7.4 and the 1/4mile in 15.7 & 88MPH

My wife's 7 seater, baby carrying, MDX does 0-60 in 6.5 and the 1/4 in 15.1 @ 93.

Again, you guys may find that "quite fast for you" but for those of us who want a little bit of kick the Mazda does not do it. Again, YMMV.

Mazda 6 sales show that they need to so SOMETHING. Just about every other competitor has a powerful engine option be it a V6 or a turbo 4.

Like I already mentioned, the select few want more power.  The MDX engine was just redone, it's not even available in the Pilot.  Now if you want to compare the 4 cylinder Mazda6 to the Honda Pilot (which is 7.8 second) than I am faster, so there.   Glad your wife's "baby carrying"  MDX can go faster than a V6 Mustang from a few years ago.  Because that's what the target market is looking for...

There is no guarantee, that the cost to develop a more powerful engine that could only be used in the Mazda6 and CX-9 would guarantee enough extra sales to make a profit.

Like other companies, Mazda is going after the new trends, the small cars.  The Mazda CX-3, and Mazda2.  Hopefully with better sales here.  More R&D can be put towards a V6 (my preference for a new CX-9) rather than a turbo 4.  All the other competitors are much larger and have more resources, so finding a balance is difficult.

Nope.  I think there is one station that opened up in the Vancouver area recently.  But nothing in SK or AB.
