You can build a vehicle with a roll cage tons stronger than a vehicle with a normal roof.

the upcoming rules will be applicable to convertibles as well as fixed roof, so that's where the problem lies... damn rollover stuff....

they'll make it a removable top still, but most likely a solid roof that can be removed... think of that new "freedom top" style panels, but for each section... will take longer, but might actually be a nice idea... then no dual tops, just the one and it is removable...

That's true. But they may have standards for opening size or for limb containment. The structure also has to work with side curtain airbags. I'm actually fairly surprised the Wrangler has gone on this far in its current form.

In the front of a car, the airbag inflates out of the dash and steering wheel and is supported, once inflated, by the dash, windshield and steering wheel. Side curtains are supported by glass and door structure. Smaller openings make it easier to keep the bags in place for the few tenths of a second they need to be effective.
