Unremarkable, but pleasant. Apart from the styling.

Wow, Toyota has put ZERO effort into improving the drivetrain since, well, the first Echo was released 11 years ago.  It gets mileage on par with the current crop of mid-size sedans.  This car would be a good choice over a Fit, how?

This car came out after the Micra and if it had been available at the time of purchase I would certainly have considered it as an alternative. Yeah...the grille is dominant in its size but 'opposite' to the pleasant Micra face...which might not be a bad place to be. Past first impressions of the face...it grows on you I find. Not a bad feature to catch the eye...a bit of attitude to go with the small.
I like the interior and 'in basic' about the same price as an all dressed Micra and still has the goodies including Touch Screen which the Nissan does not. Great looking speedo layout with large central speedo...a'la Micra. With a small package, innovation needs to be used to make use of all of the crannies; even if back to the future is one of them. Putting the shifter on the floor in between the seats takes up space that could be otherwise used for a decent size storage box. Put the darn thing up on the dash or column for the automatic which will comprise most of the production. You only put the thing in 'D' to go and 'P' when you get there. Gosh even trucks have a small rotary knob now for this function. Then you have the space for a decent box for storage of items like gloves and books and CDs whatever...right at hand. Glove boxes are unreachable these days from the drivers seat. The one on the Micra, though, is a large cavity...stretching down to Australia...G.day. You can get a lot of stuff in but try reaching it even as a passenger. Plenty of power for this vehicle and 4 speed automatic is all you need. No issues with that aspect at all. Chuckable but pleasant ride over bumps...hmm. I like it a lot and think it's the best Yaris yet. Have yet to see it in the flesh. Hmm.. more headroom which is also like the Micra.
You have a spare wheel or you don't and it is on the inside of the car or it's not. Either way space inside is eaten up.

A reliable (in the long run) automatic transmission for one. No matter if one is getting a manual.

As equipped (4-speed auto), this would be a great roundabout for $14k. At $18k, no thanks.

Heck, aside from the Micra (which you can get for $13K with the autobox) it's the only vehicle with a 4-speed box (AFAIK).  All the others have CVT's or 5/6 speeds.  Toyota is seriously behind.  Compare it with the Fit LX ($17K).  You're getting 130hp, Honda's excellent CVT, and 7.4/6.2 l/100km.  And, I'd love to know what the Yaris's RPM is at 100km/h.  I bet it's a fair bit higher than the 2000RPM that the Fit maintains.  Factor in the fact that the Fit's interior is noticeably better equipped (for the same price the LX is Honda's mid-range model), much more versatile and useable, and the steering feel is miles ahead of the Yaris.  Comparing the Yaris to the Fit is like comparing the Mirage to the Micra.  One of them comes out a clear winner.

CVT is an extra. As are other aspects over that price quoted. Still it's a good point.

...there are others with 4-speed slushies, but there are all found in the same showroom: base Corolla, Matrix, Scion xB, Scion xD.

Edit: Forgot that Tooscoops is also selling 4-speed slushies in the 2.4 litre Dodge Journeys!

Competitors:
Chevy Sonic
Ford Fiesta
Honda Fit
Nissan Micra...

Isn't the Versa Note the direct competitor to the Yaris?

And let's not forget the korean duo Accent/Rio both available with DI + 6 speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Clearly, the French-built Yaris was restyled in honor of the most celebrated pair of comic book detectives, Dupond et Dupont:

You really love to pick on the styling of the WRX, but you can't seriously put it in the same category as this.  I know looks are subjective, but that's ridiculous..

I don't think so.  The WRX has been pretty hard to look at certain years...and even in the years where you didn't throw up in your mouth they were only so-so.

That being said...I still think the WRX Sti owns the all year round hooniverse...
