Test Drive and Track Test: 2015 McLaren 650S Spider
« on: November 04, 2014, 06:30:17 am »

Lust-worthy 650S coupe and convertible more closely aligned to Ferrari's Speciale track monsters than regular 458 models, which are much less powerful.

I think it's high time that you guys start some sort of lottery and give your readers an opportunity to go with you!

As much as I love the McLarens, there's something a bit melty/syrupy about the looks of this one. Still, I'd probably take one in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

McLaren kind of pulled an Aston Martin here, revealing a new model to the lineup and the discontinuing a model that isn't even that old (see Virage and DB9).

While I always liked the 12C, I think the 650S looks a lot more appealing and exotic.

At least they are moving away from naming their cars like Brother multifunction printer/scanner/fax machines.

Nice writeup. Exclusivity combined with McLaren's F1 heritage would make this car a desirable addition to any multimillionaires stable. Crazy $$ paint option but I guess it's all relative. :fall:

Agreed, I find the 650S more visually appropriate (for a supercar...)

Does this car compete with the Huracan as well?  Or is that a rung below the 650S?

Supercar, hypercar, ...can't we just leave it at "exotic"?

But I digress.  Sounds like a nice package, but I think the best bit is the >$6,000 "elite paint" option.  Must be nice to be rich...hang on, I'll ask bossman... >:(

I think this red interior is much better than in the Targa4's, and that dashboard is truly sublime.

I don't know what it is about this thing....I can't get excited about it. Its the looks, Im sure it drives beautifully and it would blow my mind, but strictly from the looks perspective, meh. The old McLaren was the same way, the M4PC12-XC%^U..thing, guy in town has one and is always at car shows with it, meh, the guy with the red Ford GT garners a hell of a lot more attention. At this price range, a car really has to have the looks and personality....and this one is strictly one car I would put into the ".......but she has a really nice personality" category.
Lighten up Francis.....

I dunno...if I was going for an exotic, this is probably the one I'd get...most others are a dime-a-dozen, especially near Yonge and Bloor.
...can't remember the last time I've seen a McLaren in person that wasn't at an Auto Show.

If exotics are all about being unique, I think this is the only one left that is truly unique in my area.

It pains me to say it because it's all-too-frequently the more "obvious" exotic, but I'd have the 458 Spyder over the McLaren every time.  i find the Ferrari achingly beautiful, whereas the 650s, looks-wise, does nothing for me - i'd even say it looks awkward with the roof up. McLaren will no doubt be devastated to learn they won't be getting my Fantasy Dollars :P
