Friday I had what was probably the biggest presentation of my career, in front of a large group of high powered people, and the months of late nights working through it all paid off....absolutely killed it. Made for a pretty great weekend  8)
Nice!!

I've done a couple of those in auditoriums full of people "back in the day".

Feels great to crush it!

Congrats!
:iagree:

Congrats bud.  Better you than me, I hate doing any kind of presentations with a large group of people, especially if I don't know a lot of the people attending.  Not that I'm bad at it, just that I really dislike all the stress and anxiety it causes leading up to it.

Yeah, I used to give a lot of presentations and had to get used to feeling like I was about to throw up beforehand

When the crowd is on your side it's a great feeling though, like being in front of a big happy animal

Thanks guys :) I'd done a fair bit of this at my previous company, but I knew everyone there well, and the 'tone' was always a little bit lighter there. Here, lots of new faces still, and they take these things a lot more serious. The worst part is the build up, standing up there as people file in, watching yourself on the screen (it's recorded so there's a little screen that shows the 'stage'); my boss was sitting in the front trying to break the tension by cracking Canadian jokes - and it wasn't helping. Once I got through the introduction and stated rolling, the nerves disappeared and it felt pretty good.

Got my US Tax return back today...Instead of owing every year, I actually got a sizable chunk of money back, plus calculated my total income tax rate....18%. That's around half of what I was paying in Ontario.

Did you add the healthcare costs to the tax bill?

That makes me weep...

Presumably those are mostly paid by his employer.

You weren't working there for the entirety of 2023 though, right? Guessing you could be in a higher tax bracket next year.

Healthcare is employer sponsored, but I upgraded to better coverage b/c we have the kiddos, so I pay about $400/month for that additional coverage.

I worked from July 1 onwards, but it's a messy year because the company covered all my relocation expenses, which is a taxable benefit, and wasn't cheap. Then, I got a nice raise + bonus in October when I got promoted to a different role. So, all in all, my US taxable income for 2023 is pretty close to what I predict a full-year will be in 2024. I also did not contribute to 401K in 2023, but will in 2024, which should help for next year.

I see that Tennessee also has not state income tax which certainly helps.

What are property taxes like?

Property tax varies wildly by county / Town. Generally, school district is the biggest driver of that....We choose a really good school district (2nd best in the state I think) so we pay a premium for that. Currently we pay around $6K/yr, but a comparable property in Mississauga would've easily been $15-20K. However, if we choose to live in the next county over (literally like 4 minutes away) property tax on a comparable property would be around $2K....Course, nobody in their right mind would want their kids going to those schools, so you'd have to pony up $10-15K per kid for private school.
