This is my report from the first NHRA national event I attended in 1984, the Quaker State Northstar Nationals in Brainerd, Minnesota.  It appeared in the Winnipeg Sun on August 23, 1984.  I will be asking NHRA for press credentials to cover the 2024 event at Brainerd International Raceway. Wish me luck!

Friggin' awesome.

Hope you get credentialed!

Junior took me for a rip in the FIL’s rod yesterday. This car may have a  raw feel :)

Lol, no. ‘29 Ford with all work done by the FIL. Custom frame (widened) and body panels. Built a hardtop for it also.

That's really outstanding.  What's the engine and tranny type?

400 big block Chevy. Not sure on the tranny.

Very quick, and rides surprisingly nice given the low clearance. It’s been in various forms/colours throughout its life. Had a rumble seat in the trunk at one time.  The license plate says “steel” so you know it’s not a kit/fibreglass job. Last pic is from a couple years back and I was following him in his ‘64 Olds.

I have pics of the last rebuild/fab work somewhere. The man is talented, been building cars his whole life. Still works full time at 77, says he doesn’t know what he’s do if he retired.

That's insane.  Looks perfect.  The chrome on the front suspension!  The seats even!  You lucky son of a gun.

Yeah, that looks like a really nice build. The amount of work and energy that goes into something like that is insane.

Made a firm offer on the final piece to the dream car collection - the most money I've spent on a car to date but also likely the wildest, most exotic and most "value-preserving"/appreciating. If it comes to fruition, I should have it within a month.

Ended up cashing out my half of the F355 Spider that I split with my buddy; it's his dream car, not mine, and the money could be put to better use for me.

It's done; awaiting customs and shipping. Barring any unforeseen disasters, I should have the final piece to my dream car collection in hand this time next month. This particular one has some true celebrity provenance too...

Stick a fork in me; I'm done.  :)

Excellent, can’t wait to see the show and shine and read the story behind it.  Happy for you, but also jealous of that amazing garage full of toys.

Lucky guess! He made me a six figure offer on mine, I couldn’t say no.  ;D

Looking forward to it, Rev - I've always wanted a Lebaron in the collection and it was a pleasure doing business! Can't believe I'm going to have John Voigt's car!  :)

Rev has tricked you.  Jon Voight's car is the one to have.   :rofl2:

Just curious about insurance,  IIRC, on my policy I can't let anyone under 26 years old drive as they're not covered.
