It's interesting how points of view can vary so widely. This award comes the day after CR slags the Cherokee and gives it a "not recommended" rating. :-\

I may be an AJAC member but I don't agree with the Cherokee award at all.

Why is that?

When one of the biggest selling points of a product is a transmission that doesn't engage its top and most marketed gear (nine-speed transmission), it's a dud as far as I'm concerned.

I expected Mazda6 or Mazda3, but not the Cherokee, expected the MDX..

Maybe it won, because it's all new vehicle, new engine, new transmission, that may or may not work, not sure if that factors in to the votes...

Where as the MDX, is more evolutionary, minimal things better than previous generation...

Do any of them go into 9th gear?

I actually have one this week on test. One of my main goals is to get it on the highway and see if it will shift into ninth under three different conditions:

1) at the speed limit (in Nova Scotia it is 110 km/h on most divided highways)
2) normal highway cruising speed (around 120 km/h around here)
3) keep going up until it *hopefully* shifts (some have been saying it should engage at around 130 km/h)

I think 9th in the Cherokee worked out to a bit less than 1200RPM at 65mph (105kph) for the non TrailHawk V6. That's one tall gear.

Didn't someone on here say 7th through 9th are all overdrive gears?

I believe it was in that TTAC article linked to in the general forum. IIRC, it's actually fifth through ninth that are all overdrive.

Edit: just checked, fifth is 1:1 and six through nine are overdrive.

Yup, 6th through 9th.

good luck with the testing! be interested to hear the results... i have a feeling i will have a different opinion on them, but always eager to hear others' thoughts.

i'm not surprised about the jeep getting the nod being so much new technology and "domestic" plus still having some variations that are quite capable... but meh... winning this really means nothing.

in today's marketplace, all the cars are pretty good... what wins coty or whatever might be totally wrong for a huge number of buyers.

Did a quick test before the roads get nasty.

Brought speed up to 100 km/h and it seemed to want to stay in 7th for slight inclines. Under lower loads, it would go up into 8th.

Unfortunately, the roads got a little worse and I couldn't bring the speed up to the point of grabbing 9th. But, I will try again if the weather cooperates.
