A diesel surge seems to be on the way...well for trucks at least.

Hello Toyota. Its time to update the Tacoma because you're no longer the only player in the mid-sized truck market.

I think light duty diesels could be the next extended/four door cab idea for pickups.

The geniuses behind pickup design in North America didn't think we'd take to those either.

We did have a diesel boom in the 1980s, but it was pretty brief. The F150, Ranger, Chev/GMC 1500s, Mazda, Toyota, Isuzu all had diesels. A bunch of other GMs (Oldsmobile of course) and Ford (Escort, Tempo, Lincoln Continental and Mark VII) as well as all the Germans had them. When fuel prices dipped, they became a tough sell, and except for VW and Mercedes within a few years they were all gone.

Diesel supply is pretty static. If demand really bumps up, expect to see price at the pumps to ramp up too.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Heh, I had a buddy who drove his 60 hp diesel Datsun pickup almost forever, but he was a bit eccentric.

At least they didn't blow up like the GM diesels did.

Those Olds diesels were terrible. They had a well deserved reputation.

Had a few old GM diesels in the family on my U.S side. Great uncle has a 1982 fleetwood sedan with the 5.7 diesel, and an uncle out there drove a chev celebrity wagon with a 4.3 diesel (a rare bird) the caddy has really low miles but still on its second engine replaced under warranty in 1985. I love seeing all these diesel options coming out, I wish that GM would build me a diesel suburban already.

If diesel supply is limited how does Europe support 50% of it's fleet being diesel?

Interesting article from the New York Times last summer

Almost sounds like Europe would do better with more hybrids and North America with more diesels given geography and distances driven.  :-\

Europe uses a different process to refine oil that if I recall correctly yields more diesel.

Maybe the Frontier with 2.8L cummins.  I'm not sure if Nissan has this combo in other countries but the 2.8l Cummins has been in trucks before.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAIJ1Y_xlLg

A small truck or even SUV with a 2.2L to 2.8L range 4cyl diesel would be nice! manual 6spd  I don't need 6cyl 3.0L...

Toyota better get their sh*t together!!!!

the small pick up segment looks like it's going to get competitive... which is only going to be a good thing for us!!!!

I agree with you in principle but the Tacoma is a good enough truck with a strong following that I bet it just keeps on selling for a while even if Toyota ignores it – it has some glide time yet.

and that's the attitude the dealership had when I tested one out last week.
when I commented that the GM twins are coming and Toyota should get a move on, he just gave me a "whatever" type of response.

I'm an odd duck, one of the main things holding me back (potentially) is the lack of creature comforts that similar priced SUVs have (heated steering wheel, sunroof, power seat) --- none of this is available on any trim level.

I think that the tacoma gets away with fewer creature comforts because it is a 'truck-guy's' truck. It's pretty rugged, good off road, has proper truck proportions (unlike the Ridgeline). Its relatively spartan interior sort of fits with the image.

Maybe you really need a Pathfinder. Not that there's anything wrong with that.  ;)

"Even if they ignore it"??  They are already ignoring it.  I looked at the current version when it first came out and that was just a few months short of a decade ago.   It's still a good truck but it could be better if they bothered to try.

It does have a very loyal following, but as the market gets more competitive you have to expect them to step it up and modernize it.

I'll be the first to say I'm not a "truck-guy".  I'm looking to try and get the best vehicle for our needs and the way we indeed to use it.   I'm just a bit disappointed that a "loaded" Tacoma lack many creature comforts that a similarity priced suv comes with.
