Argh...How to tell car behind me that his high beams are ON!!
« on: January 21, 2014, 01:42:36 pm »
So, I'm driving home from work the other day.  It's around 6pm-ish and it's dark outside.

The car immediately behind me has got his HIGH BEAMS ON FULL and is completely blinding me.  And it's worse 'cuz I'm driving my Miata which sits quite low; that is, his blazing headlamps are at my eye/mirror level.   >:(

I try waving my hand in the rear window, trying to signal the other driver and hoping that he'll notice what's going on and turn the damn high beams off.  But of course, he never does.   >:(

If he were driving towards me, I could flash my own high beams to get his attention.

What do you guys do to tell the car behind you that his high beams are blinding you?

There's nothing you can do. If it's really that bad, pull over to let him pass. And then if you feel like being a douchebag, you can always high beam him from behind to return the favour.  :)

Slow down to a crawl until he passes you...problem solved.  (You could then follow him with your highbeams on for awhile ;D)

Ive been thinking about getting a headache rack for the truck just so I can mount two very powerful lights facing backwards just for this situation....I encounter them all the time, if they are oblivious to them when you flash them high beams coming at you, then they wont understand in front of you. Im with the crowd, slow down, let them pass, turn on high beams  ;D
Lighten up Francis.....

I've always thought cars should have an LED message display in the bottom of the rear windscreen. An editable scrolling message, preferably voice command.

"Message edit"
"Spell"
"O-I - space D-B-A-G comma space T-U-R-N space Y-O-U-R space H-I-G-H-B-E-A-M-S space O-F-F space O-R space G-T-F-O"

Something like that.

If they can't pass because of traffic or whatever, just turn your mirror. ;)

You can try angling your mirror to reflect some back at them. But generally these people are totally clueless and won't notice

4 way flashers, let them pass. Maybe that moment of inconvenience will make them think and figure out the high beams were on.
p.s. I lately encounter a ridiculous amount of Civics driving with high beams. Ppl learning to drive?

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

Pretty rare problem nowadays.  I find it much more likely that the person has their lights OFF.

A friend of mine used to have one of those 1 million candle power spotlights for this kind of thing.

I'd just pull over or slow down and let them go. You never really know what kind of nut you're dealing with.

This might work better if you do it with the outside mirror on the drivers side.

You can also choose to use your windshield washer, which will spray on the vehicle behind you.
And some cretins think I hate cars.

I open the sunroof and chuck a empty beer can out back.  Very effective.  I used to use full ones, but we're now in the age of the wimpy so one needs to adapt .....  somewhat.
